About this listen

Most of us feel overwhelmed at the idea of embarking on a grand plan for spiritual formation. As much as we'd like to, it just hasn't happened yet. Enter My One Word--an easy and surprisingly powerful practice that will allow God to form your character at a deep, sustainable level with just one word.

The concept of My One Word is simple: swap the long list of resolutions for a single word that represents what you most hope God will do in you, and let it become the lens through which you examine your heart and life for an entire year. As you focus on your word, you position yourself for God to form your character at a deep, sustainable level.

Join author Mike Ashcraft, who has led his congregation through the My One Word practice for more than five years, and Proverbs 31 Ministries author and speaker Rachel Olsen, who has lived the practice, as they share their insightful and good-humored approach to personal improvement.

The stories of growth and change throughout My One Word will:

  • Give you encouragement to discern one word to focus on
  • Deepen your relationship with God
  • Help you make changes that last

Are you ready to embrace the life-changing power of My One Word? Let Mike and Rachel be your guides along the way.

Praise for My One Word:

"You are only one decision away from a totally different life. One change in spiritual disciplines can open up new dimensions of grace and power. Use My One Word to stop repeating the past and start creating the future."

--Mark Batterson, author of New York Times bestseller The Circle Maker; lead pastor of National Community Church

"My One Word is a lens that can change every area of your life. This is more than a to-do list and more than a New Year's resolution--this can be a lifestyle with pretty dramatic results."

--Kyle Idleman, author of Not A Fan and When Your Way Isn't Working; teaching pastor of Southeast Christian Church

Simple, but powerful

This is a simple, yet powerful book. I enjoyed the narration and gained a lot of insight on the one-word concept.

One word to define your year

I have been choosing a word for several years and didn't even know it. This book has helped me to get more out of the word I've chosen for this year and given me ways to keep that word before me all year. I didn't love the narrator but was still able to focus on the content.

A must read every year

For the past 3 years I have listened to this book every December to remind me not only how to pick My One Word, but why I should. Every year my Word has been a life line. The year I chose Connecting when we found out my husband had cancer. This past year where my word was encourage and I had to face another difficult year. And as I sit and reflect about this past year, I try to piece together what next year should be, this book is exactly the hat I needed to pull the pieces together to chose a word that while it excites me, also scares me a little because of all the things God could do with it. This book has every year given me the courage to step out in faith and let God do His work in me and around me. I consider this book, message its message, and the power of focusing on one word through the lens of God and His love for me, an essential part and foundation of the person I am Becoming, the best version of myself. It can be life altering if you let it. Are you ready to go on an amazing adventure? Then stop and read or listen to this book, pick a word, and open your eyes and heart to what God has in store for you.

I plan on doing a Bible study on this next year and share this simple but wonderful idea.

A great read

I loved this book. I especially loved the last chapter, and the story about the rooster, such a beautiful way to wrap up his advice.

Inspiring but out of context and repetitive

This book is an inspiring new perspective on New Year's Resolutions, but it can also be taking the Bible out of context. Yes, it is better to focus on doing something about one thing than nothing about everything BUT there are swiss cheese like holes in this theology. Be carefully inspired by this book, but don't let it replace reading the whole of the Bible and working on your character in general.

Didn’t get much out of this book

Did not enjoy the context or content. Best part was the school class story in the beginning.
