Meet maverick British detective DI Skelgill... "mad, bad and just a little bit cozy."

WHEN A HIGH-FLYING ADMAN is stabbed to death on a company weekend in the English Lake District, local detective Daniel Skelgill finds himself wrenched from his rural Cumbrian comfort zone.

As the investigation unfolds, DI Skelgill is led a merry dance between London and Edinburgh, at every turn confronted by uncooperative suspects—colleagues, wife and lovers of the deceased—each of whom is possessed of motive and opportunity.

Is this a crime of passion, a professional hit, or a cleverly calculated killing borne out of greed and jealousy?

In this traditional-style whodunit, the case can only be solved by carefully piecing together the essential clues—but Skelgill is running out of time. The patience of his superiors wears thin, while the actions of an anonymous agent provocateur serve only to advance the moment when the killer must strike again.

As a long-time and devoted fan of Bruce Beckham’s Inspector Daniel Skelgill series, I was intrigued to see the first book in the series available on audible.com. The audiobook is a new experience for me and I was a little wary of how my favorite mystery series would translate into the spoken word. I was very quickly made a convert by Jonathan Keeble’s excellent, expressive narration. Rather than the written text sparking my imagination, Keeble’s voice was the spark and through his varied accents and intonations, my imagination was able to picture each character and scene vividly. Beckham’s always excellent writing, filled with drama, humor, great characters and an appreciation of the beauty of the English Lake District, is as delightful when listened to as it is when read. My great hope now is that this audiobook is followed soon by others in the series. It will be a different and very satisfying way to revisit this appealing series of books.

Gratified and Delighted Skelgill Fan

I enjoyed the landscape and landmark descriptions of Northern England and Edinburgh. I was totally lost in the lengthy cricket match, but that didn’t last too long.
The description that foul language had been spoken without quoting, the foul language was clever and welcome. In the main characters were engaging. I look forward to more.

A good beginning of a new series for me

The overall murder and plot were decent, some good twists. The narrator was very good. But the characters were very flat and undeveloped. I found myself not caring at all about what happened to them. After an entire story, pretty much all I know about Skelgill is that he loves fishing. The attempts at flirtation/romance seemed forced and included just to tick a box. Also, the descriptions of the cricket match and fishing trips dragged on so long and didn't move the plot at all. I enjoy things unrelated to the main plot to learn more about the characters, but in-dept play-by-play of a cricket match and fishing trip don't accomplish that. I don't care to read another of this series.

Decent plot & narration, no character development
