Publisher's summary

The old saying goes, "To the man with a hammer, everything looks like a nail." But anyone who has done any kind of project knows a hammer often isn't enough.

The more tools you have at your disposal, the more likely you'll use the right tool for the job — and get it done right.

The same is true when it comes to your thinking. The quality of your outcomes depends on the mental models in your head. And most people are going through life with little more than a hammer.

If you want to learn the best way of understanding what mental models are, their importance to your life, and how you can solve your problems faster and focus more on what really matters, then keep listening....

Without a map, it would be quite easy to get lost in the woods. Mental models work like a map. They help you to understand how the world around you works. When using mental models, you find it easy to make systematic decisions that have a positive impact on your life. Your life is largely dependent on the decisions that you make. Therefore, making informed choices repeatedly increases your confidence. It boosts your self-esteem since you know what you are doing.

There is a wide array of mental models from different disciplines. However, this doesn’t mean that you should master all of them. With these models, you only need to gain an in-depth understanding of those that are applicable to your life.

Mental models are your thinking tools. Before making any important decision, you should look for the best tool that serves its purpose. A carpenter will want to fill their toolbox with the right working tools to ensure that they can handle any carpentry job assigned to them. In the same manner, you should equip yourself with the right thinking tools to ensure that you solve your problems faster while making informed choices.

This book will help you change how you think.

Excellent! Worth every word

This is a book for people who like down to the point, effective and concise reading. The book is well organized and flows very well. All models are briefly described, a analogy is provided to make them clear and a an explanation of why they are important.

Most models you have probably heard about or already use,but read the book as a refresher course of why you should do continue to use them, now with a purpose. I am sure you will also find some new inspiration on the way. I really enjoyed it. Please keep on writing,

A Go-To Guide

I was astounded by the quality and presentation of the material in this book. Not only did I find myself recommending it before I finished it, I will be reading it again and referencing it frequently until I have all the models easily at hand for my use. Bravo! Extremely well done!

Enjoyed the time

I liked the concept of collecting a series of ideas from outstanding minds, it's like the learning process, capturing different points of view to put them in a toolbox for future. Simple and clear. Thanks to the authors for putting this together.

Muy bueno!!

Muy interesante compilación de aquellos modelos que no conocemos, o que los conocemos de forma parcial. Al final para tenerlos presentes y tratar de invertir la forma como usualmente vemos, entendemos e interpretamos nuestro entorno. Buena lectura altamente recomendable!!

Very interesting book

Really liked to read this book.
Provides multiple tools to engage life issues in a more systematic way.
With multiple history references, it will help you understand by analogy how each mental model was applied.

Treatise

Excellent and very much needed written work on how to apply mental models to thinking about and solving life’s problems as quickly as possible utilizing probabilistic thinking. This is a must read for the thinkers among us, and it really resonated with me. I am looking forward to the follow up books to come.

Amazing! A great starting point

One of the most interesting and fun to follow books that I have read regarding the way our mind can help us (or trick us) in different aspects of life. It provides you a great overview of what mental models are, and how many of them can make your life easier, if applied correctly. It is not a deep-theoretical book (if you are looking for that, better go for specific books by researchers on each of the mental models covered), but applying one of the mental models provided from the book: it gives you a great overview and ready to be applied principles, that for most people should be enough. I really liked the way it is written, and some of the models were really interesting.

Highly recommended!

This book is EVERYTHING! I’ve put off reading it for so long because life and stuff but I read it in one day. Given, if I did take more time to learn the numerical memorization part it’d been a few more days. I think the concept for that is good but confusing. I can see how it’s like a new language which seems interesting but I don’t need that right now. Outside of attempting to solidify that section, I was able to create some awesome journeys and they work. Forward and backwards... THEY WORK! It’s funny how you know our senses are connected to memory but we just don’t hone into it. I remember a professor back in undergrad nearly two decades ago had used visuals and imagery to help us remember the first twelve presidents but I didn’t pick up on it that fast. She powered through it and I was still imagining. This has that in here and it made me remember it all. A lot of hw techniques seem super stupid and absolutely ridiculous but ITS WHY THEY WORK! You laugh... but it’s true. I loved it. Just hoping to use this to study for my licensing exam I put off for two years. I’m already feeling more confident. And get this.... i didn’t study. I visualized and got creative in my head. I struggled to visualize sometimes but I would speak it out loud or look at something to help me or close my eyes. It may take time but once you get the visual it sticks. Pretty cool.
