About this listen

Wanda and Peter Parker embrace great responsibility in the next adventure of an epic multiversal series that reimagines iconic Marvel origin stories.

So many worlds, so little time. Infinite possibilities, creating infinite realities. Long have I watched death court the Scarlet Witch. But . . . what if Wanda didn’t have to suffer her grief alone?

All Wanda has ever known is her friendly little neighborhood in Queens. As an infant, after her parents died, she was adopted into a family where her doting Aunt May and Uncle Ben would always be at the breakfast table. One that includes her idiot brother, Peter Parker, who thinks hiding a spider bite, joining a secret fight club, and becoming a super hero are somehow good ideas.

When Wanda’s own powers emerge, blood, chaos, and suspicion follow in their wake. But as she learns to harness her power under the guidance of Doctor Strange, Peter is standing beside her in the Sanctum Sanctorum. And as they try to protect New York City, the Parker siblings learn that with great powers, there must also come great responsibilities—and greater losses.

Reeling from tragedy, Wanda finds herself truly alone for the first time in her life. Peter is lost to his own grief, and so she must forge ahead on her own. But on her first solo outing, she runs into a mysterious speedster—a man named Pietro. And everything she has ever known shatters like glass.

Faced with unbelievable truths, Wanda is forced to choose between the life she knows and the life she could have.

Extremely good

I was excited based purely on the premise and it was a fantastic story. It is based on the newer retcons that Marvel did for the Maximoff’s where Wanda and Pietro are enhanced by the high evolutionary, not related to Magneto.

Also, there is one detail that bothered me listening (and reading) to this:

Small plot spoiler:

The story starts in media res before going all the way to Richard and May Parker’s mission that causes them to find baby Wanda.
It takes almost the entire story to get back to that original point, and by then you’d probably forgotten about it.

Surprisingly enjoyable!

I’m not all that much of a marvel fan and I honestly I bought this book more because I really like the narrator, Allyson Voller and wanted to hear a new story. But the story was surprisingly easily to follow along with (especially compared to the movies I barely watch nowadays). Everyone was introduced and explained in a way even newcomers could understand without being an info-dump.
The story’s pace was slow and fast at just the right times and kept me interested and excited for what was happening next. Lastly the characters felt compelling and authentic, it wasn’t just all witty quips or jokes. My only complaint would have to be that the final fight felt too quick, though I guess with a speedster if they didn’t have a way to contain him before he escapes then they would have a way to end the fight instantly. So I guess it’s reader preference.

2 tragedies having a happy story

I admit this is a great book! It's wholesome and finally Wanda gets a happy childhood. This book touched me who has never had a sibling.
It pays great respect to both Wanda and Peter. Really this book made me think that these 2 really should have been siblings.
It has happy moments, sad moments and some...weird moments. (SLIGHT SPOILER) Gwen dies. And Strange didn't do anything. Before he says he is training Wanda so she would never be caught off guard. He doesn't let her go on dangerous patrols with Peter but is ok for her to face Green Goblin? He could have supervised them and interfered if he felt this was too much for them.
Oh well, a great book and now honestly I can't wait for The What If Venom and Moon Knight book.

What if…I got to read with my kids more

I have a daughter (8) who loves reading but my partner and I are always on the go. These what it’s are great ways for us to still have those magic moments we had as nerdy little kids WITH our little girl, no matter how busy we are and the delivery is AMAZING, even across timelines and a multiverse, marvel fans 8-32 can excitedly follow and enjoy.

The story was well written

I am loving these what if novels but the lackluster narrative of this book left me slogging through it bc it just didn’t hold my attention on the long drives where I want a good narrator she does change her voice but not that greatly and has next to no energy while reading it off to us I would suggest sticking to the novel for this one

Best Marvel story so far

This is honestly one of the best stories that I’ve listened to in a long time, though I am a huge Scarlet Witch fan, so I may be biased!

I love the story, love the way it was read and I absolutely adored how they wrote the characters!

Good set up, rushed finish

Was a pretty good set up and I loved the family dynamic but the ending just feels so rushed and out of nowhere.

Great writing

I love a good what if and I already dug Seanans comic book work so it was an easy jump. She’s also from the East Bay like me so maybe a little biased 😊
