About this listen

Atlanta is a city plagued by magical problems. Kate Daniels will fight to solve them—no matter the cost...

Mercenary Kate Daniels and her mate, Curran, the Beast Lord, are struggling to solve a heartbreaking crisis. Unable to control their beasts, many of the Pack’s shapeshifting children fail to survive to adulthood. While there is a medicine that can help, the secret to its making is closely guarded by the European packs, and there’s little available in Atlanta.

Kate can’t bear to watch innocents suffer, but the solution she and Curran have found threatens to be even more painful. The European shapeshifters who once outmaneuvered the Beast Lord have asked him to arbitrate a dispute—and they’ll pay him in medicine. With the young people’s survival and the Pack’s future at stake, Kate and Curran know they must accept the offer—but they have little doubt that they’re heading straight into a trap...

This dramatized audiobook also includes 1 short story: An Ill-Advised Rescue.

FANTASTIC!!

I had read this book many years ago, as I have read all of Ilona Andrews books, but listening to this graphic audio, made it all come to life again in a wonderful way. Excellent narration, and I really really enjoyed it.

Kate and Curran’s European vacation

“Are you going to help me or make fun of me?”
“Can’t I do both?”
Looking back, I think this was the book that cemented the series among my favorites.
Book 6 in the series uses a change of scenery to shake things up. To obtain panacea, a magical medicine for were-animals going lupe, a dozen of the Pack head to Europe to mediate a pregnancy between clans.

“Dear god! The cookie was poisoned!”
There were some really great things about this book. I liked the development of Hugh D’ambre, and his connection to Kate. The sparring scene was a work of art. The whodunit style investigation of who’s trying to sabotage Dessandra’s pregnancy was entertaining.

“Meeting with Clan Bouda was like sticking your hand into a garbage disposal-
The switch could be turned on at any second.”
And now that we’ve had a chance to settle into the series, this was the book where the authors opened up the throttle and let fly. There’s a huge cast familiar and new, and the dynamics between friend, foe, and other gets hella complicated. Aunt Bea, werebuffalo Eduardo, Christopher … I adored them all. Weredolphins, hobbit-sized mage gnomes? Where do they come up with this?

“(Sigh) we should have brought the werebuffalo.”
I had two minor grievances. First, although I’m loving the graphic audio format, the voice of Hugh is so vastly different from Steve West’s voicing in the Iron & Magic spinoff that it was hard for me to buy off on his character. Second, I found both Kate and Curran’s behavior frustratingly out of character. As strong as Kate is, she lost faith in Curran remarkably fast and just takes heaps and heaps of abuse- not believable. Curran, who in previous books kept lording over Kate the fact that he never lied to her, proceeded to lie to her as well as the rest of his pack- again, not believable. Hours of unnecessary secrets and seeming betrayal made for an annoying middle.

“If you need me to hold her down, I can totally do that!”
But, the power of the final hour, with a gigantic and devasting battle, brought back the greatness and caused me to forgive the minor issues. I’ve bemoaned books where every one of the good guys survives. Big meaningful deaths bring gravitas to a story. And yet hearing this story for the upteenth time,
I still railed against the loss. The emotional roller coaster I went through had me in awe of the authors. Bravo. And damn you two. The juice is totally worth the squeeze!

Love this series.

It’s hard to wait for the entire dramatized series to come out. I have the OG version and have listened to it several times. I look forward to the next dramatized version of this series as OG narration and the dramatized versions are excellent. This does give you a great mental picture of how characters look just by how they sound. To date I enjoy all the dramatizes books that I have listened too. Worth a credit, even when I have the whole series already with a different narration.

Graphic Audio does amazing narrations!

I've read the book, listened to the original audiobook and still so happy I've got them in Graphic Audio form. The story is a fantastic continuation of the story and the world building.

Fantastic narration makes a great story even better!

Ilona Andrews has long been one of my favorite authors. The world building is amazing. The characters are interesting and like real people. The plot always has plenty of action, twists, romance, humor, and scenes that evoke so much emotion.

The GraphicAudio productions have done a fantastic job of capturing all of the best parts of these books. Highly recommend!!

So good. So good. So good.

I started and finished it the same day. I couldn’t stop listening. I kinda wish I found this series once all the dramatized versions have been released, because, ugh, the wait!! This entire series is so good!

I was waiting with trepidation and I was not disappointed

I won't lie, I have been waiting for this adaptation since the very first book, because this book introduces my favorite character. Not just in the KD series but one of my all time favorite characters in all literature. I have loved Christopher ever since I first read Magic Rises as a teenager and I knew if they massacred my boy I would never forgive GA. Fortunately they absolutely NAILED Christopher! Whoever does his voice did even better than I could've dreamed. He sounds exactly as adorable and pathetic and unhinged as I wanted and I am so pleased. VERY eager to hear more. (they did take out one of my favorite exchanges "so far [Christopher] has thrown up and tried to dive in the bathtub" "at the same time?" "thankfully no" but they did so well on all my other favorite moments with him, especially the 'are you an angel' and 'does that help?' parts that I can forgive this one.)

Christopher aside, the rest of this installation was also amazing. This book was the first time I was truly impressed with the VA for Curran (Micheal Glenn, I think?). Don't get me wrong, he's been great up to this point but in this one I found myself having to pause to be impressed with his voice acting. Nora Sofyan killed it as always. Hugh not having a British accent was more than a little jarring but this VA is selling it well enough that I don't mind the different take. My other faves also did amazing. Barabas my perpetually sarcastic beloved and Jim my beloathed were awesome. I have never liked Jim but Kenyatta Rogers makes me wish he was in this book more, a feat I previously thought impossible. I don't know the name of Andrea's VA but I would non-literally give an arm for her to do Gunmetal Magic.

Amazing Performance

To the guys and gals at Graphic Audio, thank you for such a fantastic job! I'm so glad you took on this series that I love so much. My only complaint is now I have to wait until the next book.
