About this listen

Bloomsbury presents Love Is a Revolution written and read by Renée Watson.

From New York Times bestselling and award-winning author Renée Watson comes a love story about not only a romantic relationship but how a girl finds herself and falls in love with who she really is.

When Nala Robertson reluctantly agrees to attend an open mic night for her cousin-sister-friend Imani’s birthday, she finds herself falling in instant love with Tye Brown, the MC. He’s perfect, except . . . Tye is an activist and is spending the summer putting on events for the community when Nala would rather watch movies and try out the new seasonal flavors at the local creamery. In order to impress Tye, Nala tells a few tiny lies to have enough in common with him. As they spend more time together, sharing more of themselves, some of those lies get harder to keep up. As Nala falls deeper into keeping up her lies and into love, she’ll learn all the ways love is hard, and how self-love is revolutionary.

In Love Is a Revolution, plus size girls are beautiful and get the attention of the hot guys, the popular girl clique is not shallow but has strong convictions and substance, and the ultimate love story is not only about romance but about how to show radical love to the people in your life, including to yourself.

I Love love this book! Its message is not one that is given now a days! Self love is so important and I just loved that they gave a plus size girl a love life with out having to lose weight but, as she was!

So much better than I expected!

My expectations weren't high because I assumed a YA novel would be silly but I was intrigued by the story line. The story turned out to be so much more than I expected! The characters were fully developed and I always enjoy reading books with what I feel are very realistic African American characters who go beyond the stereotypes. The warmth of the family relationships was wonderful to read and the romance was very sweet. The narrator was excellent and she managed to add distinctive personalities to all of the characters which many narrators seem to struggle with. I loved it!

One of the best books I have read in a while.

Nala Robertson is one of the favorite characters I have experienced in a book. She undergoes so much character development throughout the novel. Having the author read the book was an INCREDIBLE choice. I love her voice and the fact that she really knows her characters. The whole storyline made me very happy. All of the relationships that Nala has and develops throughout the novel bring the story to life. I like how it's not cookie-cutter and it actually feels real. The character development is my favorite part because she learns to truly love herself and who she is. Even though she changed for someone else, in the end, she carries parts of it with her. Tye really makes her a better person, even if it isn't on purpose. This book also has great culture in it which I can appreciate as a reader. There are just too many great things about this book and its audiobook that I can write about.

Beautiful Black Love & Coming of Age

I thought this story was cute and hand made for black girls. She learned to love her own hair and all of its diversity. She also learned some lessons in love. Sweet romance for teens.

I just loved this

A wonderful story with nuance and details that seemed so genuine and multi faceted of a young black girl coming of age dealing with racism, micro aggressions, with many different family dramas and interesting reactions. Highly recommend.
