Acerca de esta escucha

A timely and powerful story about a teen girl from a poor neighborhood striving for success, from acclaimed author Renee Watson.

Jade believes she must get out of her neighborhood if she's ever going to succeed. Her mother says she has to take every opportunity. She has. She accepted a scholarship to a mostly-white private school and even Saturday morning test prep opportunities. But some opportunities feel more demeaning than helpful. Like an invitation to join Women to Women, a mentorship program for "at-risk" girls. Except really, it's for black girls. From "bad" neighborhoods.

But Jade doesn't need support. And just because her mentor is black doesn't mean she understands Jade. And maybe there are some things Jade could show these successful women about the real world and finding ways to make a real difference.

Friendships, race, privilege, identity - this compelling and thoughtful story explores the issues young women face.

Having the author read brought a even greater quality to an already profound book. A colorful and mosaic view of the young black women's lived experience in the US.

I teach 8th grade Language Arts, and this book was recommended to me by our school librarian. I am so glad I had the opportunity to listen to this important novel read by the actual author. We need to hear these stories, so that people can learn from Jade's courage to speak up!

Extraordinary!

This was a great read! I love how Jade gained her confidence and began to speak up. Once she did she influenced the trajectory of her path, she began to receive what her heart desired and deserved!

Story was short and sweet. Relatable and true. It tied well with the title. Loved that the story focused solely on the main character. We didn’t read too much back story about other characters. I was surprised with the incorporation of spanish but it made sense. Overall good.

She’s got a point!!

The storyline was not what I expected but I gave it a chance. Still not impressed. The narrator made the story slow and somewhat boring. I am sure it could have been better if I read the novel without the narration.

Indifferent

Loved it, it provides voice for young ladies trying to navigate life, friendship, family and social issues, while still remaining true to self.

This book was so amazing and meaningful. I had no idea what it’s like to be a black person living in our racist society. Everything about this is perfect. Thank you.

The book was relatable for me, as someone who went to private school on scholarship but still lived in what is called the hood. Staying authentic while navigating new ways of doing things without losing yourself and bringing the people you love along for the ride. This took me back down memory lane while incorporating ways for me to continue to open doors for others who come after me.

As a black girl in a predominant white school I feel heard. The hundreds of times I feel unsafe and scared that the next day will bring it’s own set of dehumanizing challenges. But this book taught me that I am beautiful, black, and stronger than I think I am. I feel ready to face anything!!

I could relate sm!!💗💗
