Publisher's summary

The daughter of an artist, Helen Tworkov grew up in the heady climate of the New York School of Abstract Expressionism; yet from an early age, she questioned the value of Western cultural norms. At the age of twenty-two, she set off for Japan, then traveled through Cambodia, India, and eventually to Tibetan refugee camps in Nepal.

Set against the arresting cultural backdrop of the sixties and their legacy, this intimate self-portrait depicts Tworkov's search for a true home as she interacts with renowned artists and spiritual luminaries including the Dalai Lama, Pema Chödrön, Joseph Goldstein, Bernie Glassman, Charles Mingus, Elizabeth Murray, and Richard Serra.

Interweaving experience, research, and revelation, Helen Tworkov explores the relationship between Buddhist wisdom and American values, presenting a wholly unique look at the developing landscape of Buddhism in the West. Lotus Girl offers insight not only into Tworkov's own search for the truth but also into the ways each of us can better understand and transform ourselves.

Absolutely fantastic. A life story with lessons for all.

I loved the story and the reading by the author herself. Though much of it relates to her Buddhist path, her whole life is fascinating. There were SO many tidbits and lessons I’ll cherish and hopefully practice in my life.

A Remarkable Life

I enjoyed this much more than I had anticipated. Helen’s extraordinary life journey had me laughing, gasping, crying and shaking my head over the breadth and depths of her experiences. The Buddhist way is fascinating to me and I aspire to deepening my understanding. As a side note, I have to shake my head and chuckle at the reviewers here who complained that she “gets political” at the end. It’s HER autobiography, for Pete’s sake. Her truth. And she tells the TRUTH that may be uncomfortable for some to hear. But, come on…. If you’re reading a book about a Buddhist’s journey, honor her journey. And take her (and Buddha’s) advice: if something makes you uncomfortable, sit with it. See what happens.

A waste of my time

Listened to the whole audiobook. When it ended with obvious Trump Derangement Syndrome it negated all of the very few positive aspects of this book relating to Buddhism. So two faced, so woke! In the end a complete waste of time!
