Publisher's summary

A veteran Marine and an ex-convict find themselves on opposite sides of the law in this propulsive new thriller from award-nominated suspense master and "damn fine storyteller" Owen Laukkanen (Kirkus Reviews).

Could your closest friend be a killer? When a body washes up outside Deception Cove, Washington, Jess Winslow - once a US Marine, now a trainee sheriff's deputy - is assigned to investigate. But when she realizes it's "Bad" Brock Boyd, a hometown celebrity lately fallen from grace, things become complicated. The last person seen with Boyd was her own boyfriend, Mason Burke.

An ex-convict and newcomer in town, Mason is one of the only people who can understand Jess's haunting memories of her time in Afghanistan - and her love for Lucy, her devoted service dog. Finding one another in Deception Cove has been the best thing to happen to either of them in years. So Jess knows Mason could never be guilty of murder - doesn't she? As the facts of the case point ever more squarely at Mason, Jess must face that everything she thinks she knows about him might be wrong.

A thrilling sequel to Deception Cove, and a heart-pounding adventure all its own, Lone Jack Trail pushes Jess and Mason to a shocking confrontation and will test everything they've come to love and trust in Deception Cove.

Readers mispronounced local names

The book was good but every time the readers mispronounced names it distracted from the story...especially Port An-juh-less, not an-juh-eeze. Took me right out of the story, every time. How hard is it to research and use proper pronunciation? Sloppy.

Fantastic

This book was amazing. I can’t say enough good things about it. I actually live not to far from Port Angeles so it was fun to read. Lots of action. Kept me on the edge of my seat a few times.

Easy to listen to and decent characters

Liked the way the author tackled a female military character and her troubles adjusting back into life as a working woman.

Excellent Sequel!! Would love to see a third!!!!

I listened to the first book in this series (Deception Cove) when it was first published in 2019. That book easily earned five stars and an Excellent Review. I had not realized there was a book two until Audible recently ran a 2 for 1 book sale and I saw this had been published only a year later. I don’t know how I missed it but am so glad I finally found it. This book is equally as good as the first. As a long time fan of Owen Laukkanen’s Stevens and Windermere series I never hesitate to purchase one of his books because I know I can count on a good solid story.
This book did not disappoint me. This is a very good procedural that kept me guessing until the end. The background story is complex enough and the characters are fleshed out. The two protagonists are Jess Winslow, a deputy and her boyfriend Mason Burke. He’s an ex-convict who spent 15 years in prison for being the driver at a robbery/murder when he was 18 years old.
Now there’s been a murder in their small town. An anonymous witness comes forward to say she saw Burke commit the crime. Now the witness has also been murdered. Everything points to Burke who claims innocence.
Kevin Stillwell and Courtney Patterson do an excellent job narrating.
This book has my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.

Intriguing

This novel was a delightful sequel to Deception Cove. War veteran Jess Winslow, ex-con Mason Burke, and their service dog Lucy become intertwined in a murder case that tests their ties. The narrators continue to do a great job on this series.

Good story.

Too much violence and foul language for my taste. I think this book was a sequel. I should have listened to the deception cove book first. I may listen to that one, since it's hard to let go of the characters when the book is over.

Good Action Adventure

Not quite as good as Deception Cove, but a decent action book with likeable characters from that book carried forward. I listen during treadmill exercise and would try a third book in the series if it existed.
