Publisher's summary

World-renowned thinker and scholar Thich Nhat Hanh, considered by many to be a "Living Buddah", explores the spiritual crossroads where the traditions of Christianity and Buddhism meet. Living Buddha, Living Christ reawakens our understanding of both religions and the connections between them.

The best-selling author of Creating True Peace, and one of the most beloved Buddhist teachers in the West, Vietnamese monk Thich Nhat Hanh has been part of a decades-long dialogue between the two greatest living contemplative traditions. In lucid, meditative prose, he explores the crossroads of compassion and holiness at which the two traditions meet, and reawakens our understanding of both. "On the altar in my hermitage," he says, "are images of Buddha and Jesus, and I touch both of them as my spiritual ancestors."

Just what I needed to hear!

Great listen/read for the Christian feeling indifferent about practicing Buddhism/Zen practice. I was raised Christian but find now, at 31, Zen Buddhist practices help with the struggles of everyday life so much more, but almost felt guilty about practicing in lieu of upbringing. Do not feel guilty!

Direct Comparative Listening

Great parallel of Buddhism and Christianity. This read or listen would serve the latter very well. Intolerance can be eliminated.

Great parallels between the teachings and practices of Christ and Buddha

A few years ago I picked up a book, called “Just Jesus”, which has only the words spoken by Jesus in the New Testament. I was immediately stunned by how similar the teachings of Christ and Buddha are, when you isolate Jesus’ own words. in fact, the only reason the teachings differ are because we look at Christianity through the sole perspective of Saul of Tarsus; better known as the apostle Paul. That led me to look into the history and the reasons why western Christianity is built on the perspective of Paul rather than the actual teachings of Christ. That is a whole other story for another time, but in short, or it brought me face-to-face with the question that I needed to ask myself: whom do I follow? Christ? Or Paul? Since then I’ve been combing through literature, some centuries old, researching Christ’s teachings without Paul’s judgemental and egotistical perspective. In doing so, I came across this wonderful book that compares the teaching of Buddha and Christ, which demonstrates to us that message Christ came to deliver is not a singular truth but rather a universal message of peace, love and detachment from the material world. God bless you on your journey.

Great book!

I enjoyed the way the writer explained the similarities between Christianity and Buddhism, while also integrating various traditions. The only thing I don’t agree with is “tolerance.” My opinion is that in almost every religious practice, especially Christianity, we are called to love—NOT tolerate others. Overall all it was a great book though.

Great read!

Great read if you are wanting to understand more about the world. Helps open your mind to the possibilities that religions aren’t all that different and we have a lot more in common than we may realize.
