Publisher's summary

The Texas border is under attack. Police are overwhelmed and refugees flee in terror from eight small towns. Sergeant Jerry Nunez and his soldiers are ordered to retake one town from an unknown enemy.

During the desperate fight, Nunez discovers how inhuman people can truly be, struggles to carry on despite tragic losses, and is forced to peer into the depths of his own brutality. And he learns a lesson as painful as it is true: for a warrior, loss of freedom and honor is a worse fate than death.

Literature not just fiction.

The author did a good job of building characters that are hard to love. What you end up doing that anyway. He creates situational conflicts that you won't like but you have to deal with. Just hold on and fight the way the characters do through the entire book.. But it Is cathartic for those of us who've been there. To the author: Semper fi brother. Thank you.

Excellent

This was the first audible book that I’ve ever listened all the way through at one time. It was SO good! And Dawson is an amazing narrator!

A gritty, realistic and totally plausible story.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Line in the Valley is a good book and I would recommend it to friends. Although I've never been in the military, many of my friends and family were and this book rings true to their accounts.

It was easy to identify with the characters and sympathize with them as they fought not only the invaders, but also bureaucracy while dragging along inept fellow soldiers.

Any additional comments?

I knocked off one star because of the heavy use of language. It's realistic, but I thought the tone could still be conveyed with a little less of it. That's the only reason I couldn't recommend it to some of my friends. For those who are not bothered by such things, I'd give this one 5 stars.

The grubby, confused reality of combat. Get ready!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I did in fact attempt to get almost all of this (nearly 11 hrs) crammed into one listening day! (understand dear reader that trucker life allows me such a luxury!) It was hard not to as about the time the story-line cheated death for a moment the next time around had you right back in the center of the cross hairs.

Any additional comments?

Friend, if you enjoy a solid military plot, you will enjoy this book. The auhor (Chris Hernandez) takes you places that the over-drama of the "Die Hard"-flavored, over polished Rambo-stuff can't. You get pulled into the fog of combat. You taste the dirt and desperation. You really have no promise that it will end well.A great book. I hope more of his titles make it into audio format.

Hookah

Liked everything about this. Written in a way only someone who has actually put on the gear and done the job. Excellent story, very unpredictable and never slow. Absolutely recommend this.

INTENSE!!

What did you love best about Line in the Valley?

Incredibly intense story! The action sequences were amazing! I swear I could hear the radio key up beeps during the fire fights because the action was so well written and the dialog so realistic.

What did you like best about this story?

It pins you to your seat with fast paced action, but still tackles some very difficult and contentious issues. It is especially interesting to see the main character deal with these issues because, from Chris' blog and BreachBangClear.com posts, I know the main issue is one that Chris has done a lot of research on and a lot of very deep thinking. I like the way Chris addresses the issue and explores it from the perspective he does, especially since Nunez and his platoon are the "good guys."

Which scene was your favorite?

Lots of favorite scenes! The action scenes are amazing though. .. I really can't say it enough!

Any additional comments?

Very entertaining! I look forward to more of Chris' work!
I also liked the reading performance. No silly voices for different characters; no switching between readers. Just a really simple, expressive reading of a very intense book!

Decent story

Was turned off by excessive cussing, story was ok, I enjoyed the epilogue the most.
