About this listen

The Shadowhunters of Los Angeles star in the first novel in Cassandra Clare's newest series, The Dark Artifices, a sequel to the internationally best-selling Mortal Instruments series. Lady Midnight is a Shadowhunters novel.

It's been five years since the events of City of Heavenly Fire that brought the Shadowhunters to the brink of oblivion. Emma Carstairs is no longer a child in mourning but a young woman bent on discovering what killed her parents and avenging her losses.

Together with her parabatai, Julian Blackthorn, Emma must learn to trust her head and her heart as she investigates a demonic plot that stretches across Los Angeles, from the Sunset Strip to the enchanted sea that pounds the beaches of Santa Monica. If only her heart didn't lead her in treacherous directions....

Making things even more complicated, Julian's brother, Mark - who was captured by the faeries five years ago - has been returned as a bargaining chip. The faeries are desperate to find out who is murdering their kind - and they need the Shadowhunters' help to do it. But time works differently in faerie, so Mark has barely aged and doesn't recognize his family. Can he ever truly return to them? Will the faeries really allow it?

Glitz, glamours, and Shadowhunters abound in this heartrending opening to Cassandra Clare's Dark Artifices series.

Not my favorite, but still incredibly hooked!

To put it all out there, this was my least favorite Shadowhunter book. My ranking is: the Infernal Devices (that series brilliant), the Mortal Instruments, and the Dark Artifices.

*Spoiler alert*
My reason is the following: The story was too predictable. Cassandra Clare tends to have fun with the parabatai relationship in each of her stories, often making it a central plot like in the Infernal Devices and now this book. I felt like this book read a little like a YA romance book with a mix of action which wasn't as much the case in her other books. I also read from another reviewer that the characters were not likeable (Emma and Jules) and I have to agree. I liked them, but I didn't love them and couldn't really connect with either of them. Emma comes of selfish in the beginning and a little overwhelming and Jules is still a mystery.

But in the end, I have to say that this book is another brilliant hit, and Cassandra Clare knows what readers wants and delivers it. In the beginning of the book, I was overwhelmed by all the details, every time something happened Cassandra would describe every single character's reaction - whether it was them reacting to pizza or to a demon. It seemed unnecessary at first, but now that I'm done with the book, I get her reasoning - it made me attached to every single character - I got to really know and now I miss them! So now that it's over, when's the next one coming out?! =)

Read Clare's Other Series FIRST

While you may not "technically" need to have the information from the Internal Devices, Mortal Instruments, or Shadowhunter Academy short stories, Lady Midnight very clearly takes place after all of those events and the endings of each are very explicitly discussed. I also don't know if Clare explains her world clearly enough in LM, so you would probably want to have already read everything. I had read all but the Shadowhunter Academy shorts, and I was a bit sad to learn that I needed to already know what happened in them. They contained more main character plot than the Bane Chronicles had, and it directly affects the events of Lady Midnight.

Another shadow hunter success!

I loved this and can't wait for the next book in the series! More action, more forbidden love, and revenge.

Can't get enough

I have never been disappointed by any of the Cassandra Clare stories based in the shadow hunter worlds. this one was no exception. my only regret was that it came to an end.

Lady Midnight

What made the experience of listening to Lady Midnight the most enjoyable?

Morena Baccarin has a pleasant voice, it helps I loved her in Deadpool. The story is intriguing, as all of Cassandra Clare's books have been.

What did you like best about this story?

I love how Cassandra Clare keeps expanding the Shadowhunter story, but also mentions my favorite characters from her past books.

What about Morena Baccarin’s performance did you like?

She has a pleasant, soothing voice, but not so monotone it makes me want to fall asleep.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I cried a few times while listening to the book. *Spoilers* Especially when Emma had to break Julian's heart. Cassandra Clare knows just how to write a scene to make me feel both characters' pain.
