Publisher's summary

Damned if you do, damned if you don't....

A solid career, a loving, supportive father and older brother, the best friends in the world, and the love of a special man.

Kane Scott—son of Nathaniel Scott, the Kingmaker, one of the most influential and powerful men in the country—has everything he ever wanted and more. But soon, his happiness becomes clouded by shadows of the past. His husband's past.

From the start, Kane’s heart was captured by the beautiful, emerald-eyed redhead emanating an inner sadness. When Willard asked for Kane’s promise to never inquire about his past, Kane was quick to make that promise.

Now, that forbidden past stands at Kane and Willard’s doorstep, threatening everything they have built together…leaving Kane with two choices: Break his promise and his husband’s trust by pressuring Willard to reveal secrets buried deep within his soul…or stay true to his word and watch helplessly as the man he loves falls to pieces.

Two choices. Two consequences. Kane must determine before it’s too late which path will lead to healing…and which will lead to destruction. Choosing the wrong path could cost him more than he’s willing to lose.

Strange story

but it was good. There is a lot of sexual abuse that makes you want to strangle Willard's father for what he did and let others do to his son. The narrator is definitely new to the game and is stiff but sometimes get into the story, given more time I think he could be good. It does have HEA ending although all the bad guys get away.

New to me author

I requested this book and have voluntarily given my unbiased review.

The story was a good story. I was a little put off by how the author referred to characters after we were already introduced to them. But I enjoyed the story and was able to follow it through.

This narrator is not new to me. He isn't a go-to fav but he's decent. I believe I've listened to something else by him where the storyline was a bit humorous and his narration of that book had me laughing.

All in all this was a good listen. I was able to listen while working with this book playing in the background.

loved it

I loved this book. Mike Peterman's voice really brings this story to life. Kane Scott is the son of the Kingmaker. Kane and his husband Willard are happy. Willard's past demons come back to haunt him. What is Kane to do? He can't break a promise to his beloved Willard but what if the past can ruin their future? He has a choice to make. Can Kane make the right choice before its to late?

I really wanted to like this book

I really wanted to like this book. there was angst and romance and lot of intriguing plot elements. But the pacing felt really off. Also, this is the first book I've read by this author. And there were a lot of characters in here with, no context. so I didn't know who most of them were. I didn't understand sometimes what was going on. I'm going to try some other books by the author and hope going back to this one might make more sense.

I enjoyed it.

I like this story I'm going to go and listen to some more books by H.M Wolfe. I struggle to finish the book for one reasons the narrator sounds slightly muffled and I don't know why but that always gets to me.

Kane

Kane: The Kingmaker's Sons is the start to a new series. Honestly I was confused at the beginning. I felt like I was missing information I was supposed to already know. I need to dig deeper and see if there are other books I should read first to enjoy this series better. That being said I did enjoy how caring and productive Kane was of his husband. Willard deserved love and happiness after what he went through, both as a child and as an adult. There are secrets revealed and a mystery to solve. I recommend this book especially if you're already familiar with the main characters.
Narrator Mike Peterman does a wonderful job.

I really did want to like this

I knew going into this that it was a spinoff of another series so I was ok that there was clearly going to be characters that had backstories I didn’t know but this felt more like I was jumping in towards the end of a series and it was a bit hard to follow at the beginning with who was who. Once I got past this I was able to follow the story but I never really got invested into it. I’m assuming that in the rest of this series we will see some of the unresolved plot points addressed and that might make it easier to get invested in those books.

On a positive note I really liked that main characters and their friends and family were all very supportive of one another but even that felt a bit heavy handed and unrealistically saccharine. Additionally I really didn’t like that there would regularly be a character who would react strongly to something but then after literally once sentence of explanation by another character they would completely reverse their opinion to support them.

I think perhaps that the writing style just wasn’t my cup of tea so if think you might like this book I suggest that you read the other books leading up to this one and if you enjoy them you will probably like this one. It’s not a requirement to read any of the other books first but it might help you get invested into it in a way I just wasn’t able to.

I also wasn’t a fan of this narrator. It was immediately obvious that he was reading which is a big turn off for me. He was very easy to understand and while he didn’t draw me into the story I wouldn’t say that he prevented me from enjoying it.
