It is said that donburimono—rice served in a dish with its side dish placed on top—was created in the Edo period and originated with unadon, rice topped with eel.

丼にご飯をよそい、その上におかずをのせた料理のことを丼物と呼び、その元祖は江戸時代に誕生した鰻丼だといわれます。
時間をかけずに食べられる丼物は、せっかちな江戸っ子が生み出したファーストフードだったようです。
江戸時代には天丼も生まれ、明治時代以降に牛丼や親子丼、カツ丼、海鮮丼などが登場しました。
こうした?定番?の丼物のほかにも、東京の深川丼や、静岡県や神奈川県のしらす丼、名古屋市の味噌カツ丼など、地方色豊かな名物丼物もあります。
丼物は蕎麦屋や寿司屋などのほか、専門店でも食べることができ、特に牛丼はいくつかのチェーン店がしのぎを削っています。
