Publisher's summary

Having attempted and failed to traverse the entire 212-mile John Muir Trail twice before, Josh Mathe decided to brave the Sierra Nevada wilderness one last time. And to up the ante, this time he would try to run! In the Footsteps of Greatness is an inspirational and refreshingly authentic account of what Josh found while exploring his limits on the edge of the world.

From the shady depths of Yosemite Valley to the top of 14,505-foot Mount Whitney through some of the most treacherous and starkly beautiful terrain on the planet, this memoir is both a thrilling adventure (complete with bear encounters and snowstorms) as well as a poignant look into the mind and spirit of an athlete who is nothing if not human.

Such an Inspiring Story!!!

Josh has a way of telling his story that brings you right into it. He talks about his failures right along with his successes. It’s done in a way that you can see yourself in the same situations. I am not even a runner or an avid hiker, but through the story of his experiences, you realize it’s about the journey and how you face your own challenges. He has the ability of describing his surroundings along his 212 mile run on the JMT, that you feel as though you’re right there with him. Whether you’re a runner (or not) or a mountain hiker (or not), you’ll enjoy this book as much as I did. It’s a definite page-turner!

ok

author, while engaging on an interesting undertaking is so self absorbed he diminishes his effort. He is condescending and snarky in his endless slight criticism of his fellow travelers. Anyone who has engaged in endurance sports will recognize his internal struggles and joys but not the better than thou attitude. Only ok.

Worth your time

I'll be embarking on the John Muir Trail in August, so when Josh came to Santa Rosa to speak I headed down to my local REI to hear what he had to say. His presentation was amusing and helpful, so I decided to purchase his book.

It's a quick read, and not at all the guide to the trail I expected. Instead it focuses on mindset, on Josh's personal battle with the trail and his ultimate victory. I highly recommend it for any hiker, especially those considering the JMT!

No Thanks...

The book is twinged with elitism. The author seems to have narcissistic inner dialogue when encountering humans on different life paths, especially when their goals are not apparent tangible numbers, or a specific time in which success is measured. Hard to relate this grandiose perspective of self with the JMT and backcountry.
