About this listen

D.J. Burr is a man on a mission; successful business owner, highly respected psychotherapist, and survivor of a dysfunctional life. At a young age, all he wanted was to be loved, but instead found himself targeted by a sexual predator. D.J. slipped into a life of addiction and clawed his way through broken relationships and seedy sex clubs - looking for love in all the wrong places. D.J. will take listeners on a roller coaster of emotions as he details his search for grace and love.

Interesting Journey - Very Insightful

D. J. Burr's story is a very interesting journey. It's hard to imagine how much strength and courage it takes to survive a dysfunctional childhood, child molestation, and being gay......

The narrator, Royal Jaye, really captures the essence of the various tramatic moments. It's almost like bring a fly on the wall of each experience.

Definitely will be recommending it to friends. It's a great story and performance.

Powerful, raw, inspiring!

D. J. provides a powerful, raw, inspiring narrative of his journey.
It was hard to listen at times, but absolutely necessary to fully comprehend the abuse he experienced as well as the struggles on the road to recovery.
As a fellow therapist, I applaud D. J. for his honesty, which is truly encouraging and motivating.
I would recommend this book to all people, who are either directly struggling with addiction and codependency, and to the addict's family and friends, who would like to understand and help.

Uplifting, not Educational

If you are listening to this book to learn how the desire to feel loved causes sexual / love addictions and how those can be overcome through specific exercises, you'll be very disappointed with this book. If on the other hand, you are struggling with feelings of being gay, have been sexually abused by an adult, and feel like your life is sexually and emotionally out of control and irreversible, you might find this book uplifting and encouraging that all is not lost. I was hoping the book would be more educational from a psychological perspective. It wasn't and is the main reason I rated the book so low. Here are other reasons. The text does not sound like it was edited and there are grammatical errors. Also the first 12 chapters could easily have been condensed into one or two chapters. (If however you want to hear about the endless missteps, poor choices and sexual activities that dug the author into a desperate emotional hole, then all 12 chapters provide that.) From a quality aspect the audio sounds like it was recorded with a cheap voice recorder where the narrator couldn't control the volume. Some passages are quiet while many blast through the speaker with high volume and distortion. In general, the book sounds like a paper written by a teenager who is about to enter therapy and was asked by the therapist to write a summary of what happened in their life up to this point. The book is in the first person and much of it is in the style of "he said this and I said that and this happened, and then that happened and then I did this and he did that..." For someone who is supposedly a therapist, this author does very little to educate the reader on how the desire to be loved leads to the behaviors of sexual and love addiction. And not enough is said to advise addicts how to reprogram their addictive behaviors with specific exercises to eliminate them. The most advice is a few of the 12 steps and making a list of behaviors you want to do and avoid. As a lover of human psychology topics and expecting this to be a book more like "Lonely All The TIme" by Ralph Earle, I found this book empty and disappointing.
