About this listen

James Guillory, Jr. narrates this inspirational tale about leveraging the values his father instills in him and leaning on his roots to overcome adversity.

On his first ever hunting excursion as a young boy, James takes an uncalculated step in the delicate South Louisiana marsh that becomes the catalyst for a metaphor used by his dad that foreshadows his life: "There’s an art to navigating the marshland, and the steps you take while on your journey can cause you to either sink or swim."

Through their many adventures together, James’ dad helps him to recognize and learn that with a respect and appreciation for the outdoors, important lessons can be found and an unwavering bond woven full of love and admiration between father and son can be had.

Just as James becomes a young man who starts to understand his own life's meaning, an unexpected moment happens that leaves him faced with sudden and drastic change.

Left to question everything about what he has learned and what he can become, James ventures away from the life he was taught to live, but at his lowest moment, he finds a glimmer of hope.

Through a sign that sends him back to where it all began, he embarks down a path of understanding, and he learns that the true reason to finally knowing how to walk in the marsh will lead him to a rekindled life full of meaning and purpose.

Good lessons in life

I liked the way this book was presented in a collection of vignettes. So many are relatable. The only thing I didn’t like was the reader. It was obviously read for young people. I think I would have enjoyed the printed version more.

Duck hunting and life lessons

Real stories that everyone can relate to, duck hunter or not. Chad paints a vivid picture and I could definitely see him stuck in the mud of the marsh. Parts made me laugh; parts made me cry. Recommend for those early morning drives to the hunting blind.

Great story for all ages

Great book for all ages. life's lessons are often not learned in classrooms and this book gives a glimpse into why the heritage of the outdoors is a great place to learn. Easy read for all ages. I'd recommend the book to young men. however as a man approaching my middle age, there is a great message about the legacy we leave behind.

How to walk in the Marsh

I like to say this book has become one of my favorite books, although I am not a duck hunter that's besides the point, it is the story being told that I love the most about it.

I really enjoyed the book, How to Walk in the Marsh

This was wonderful story with a lot of important life lessons. I would highly recommend it to anyone; it’s appeal I think would go to a much broader audience than just sportsmen. The presentation by the reader, Gregory, was spot on and really carried me along as the story progressed.
