Read by the author.
For so many entrepreneurs, running a small business ended up looking different than they imagined. They’re stressed, discouraged, and not confident in their plan for growth. In How to Grow Your Small Business, Donald Miller gives entrepreneurs a 6-step plan to grow their businesses so they produce dependable, predictable results.
Using the exact steps you’ll learn in this book, Donald Miller grew his small business from four employees working out of a basement to a 15 million dollar operation, increasing revenue sixfold in just six years. As Miller grew his own business from the ground up, he realized nobody had put together a simple, step-by-step playbook for growing a business. That book didn’t exist. Until now.
In this book, you’ll learn the 6 steps to grow a successful small business and create a playbook to implement them—your Flight Plan. When you have a completed Flight Plan in hand, you can stop drowning in the details and spend more time doing the things you truly love—in your business and your life.
In How to Grow Your Small Business, you’ll learn how to:
- Cast a vision for your company that includes three economic priorities
- Clarify your marketing message
- Install a sales framework that makes your customers the hero
- Optimize your product offering
- Run a management and productivity playbook that aligns your entire team.
- Use 5 checking accounts to manage your cash flow

Story
A business parable about how to create a start-up that won't trap you when you want to sell it. According to John Warrillow, the number one mistake entrepreneurs make is to build a business that relies too heavily on them. Thus, when the time comes to sell, buyers aren't confident that the company-even if it's profitable-can stand on its own. To illustrate this, Warrillow introduces us to a fictional small business owner named Alex who is struggling to sell his advertising agency.

Story
Most organizations and individuals work in the context of annual goals and plans; a 12-month execution cycle. Instead, The 12 Week Year avoids the pitfalls and low productivity of annualized thinking. This book redefines your "year" to be 12 weeks long. In 12 weeks, there just isn't enough time to get complacent, and urgency increases and intensifies. The 12 Week Year creates focus and clarity on what matters most and a sense of urgency to do it now. In the end more of the important stuff gets done and the impact on results is profound.

There are four characters in every story: the victim, the villain, the hero, and the guide. These four characters live inside us. If we play the victim, we’re doomed to fail. If we play the villain, we will not create genuine bonds. But if we play the hero or guide, our lives will flourish. The hard part is being self-aware enough to know which character we are playing. In this book, Donald will use his own experiences to help you recognize if the character you are currently surfacing is helping you experience a life of meaning.

Holy S Balls, I loved it!!!!
Wow. Just wow. This and The E Myth have been my two favorite entrepreneur books so far. The E Myth is more of a storyline with a lesson, though. How to Grow Your Small Business has a lot of worksheets and provides a more solid way to implement business strategies.
It’s designed as a framework, something I definitely can see how to utilize in my own business. Miller’s other book: Building a Storybrand is widely known and popular. I honestly haven’t read it yet but it’s been on my list to read. This book summarizes his previous book in one chapter and also provides structure around that so you can understand not only how to have a storybrand but build your business around it. I love this. I probably won’t bother reading the storybrand book because I’m not a fan of too much fluff and if this goes over the basics, I think I’m good. The book was released in March of this year so it doesn’t have a ton of reviews yet (I'll be the 99th reviewer on Audible!) but it’s so, so, so good. I highly recommend it for any business owner.
