About this listen

'A wonderfully warm and witty debut novel about family secrets and sibling rivalry' The four MacLeod sisters are no strangers to sisterly rivalry and with one of them about to be married, there are bound to be fireworks. Perfectionist Natalie wants the 'wedding of the year'. Harassed mother, Milly, just wishes her bridesmaid's dress wasn't the size of a tent. Career-obsessed Avril secretly moons over a married man and world traveler, Hazel, the youngest, yearns to be taken seriously. Forced together for the first time in years, and with an unexpected guest stirring up old resentments, squabbles are inevitable. But when tragedy strikes things really fly apart - as some shocking skeletons emerge rattling from the crowded MacLeod closet...

Funny and emotional!

I was gifted this audiobook by Audiobook Jukebox in exchange for an honest review.
How To Survive Your Sisters by Ellie Campbell, which is really two sisters... So they knew what they were talking about when they wrote this book. I loved this book, so my little joke here is: What do you get when you cross an English mum, A Hollywood Agent, a Bride to be and a free spirited baby of the family... One very funny book!
This book is centered around on Natalie getting married, and all of the sisters being together with jealousy and differences causesing a little bit of a tiff. Each character was well developed, the authors did not skimp on anyone. I felt like I was part of the family and wanted to be right in the middle of them.
This is a great romance book, it was more of a sweet funny read. I don't have a sister of my own but by the time I was done with this book I felt like I had 4!
I give How To Survive Your Sisters 4 stars

Family Love and Loyalty

Such an enjoyable story. Interesting family tale with great characters~loved them all (well, minus Jeremy and his posh parents). Four very different sisters, "looking at the world through very different lenses" and their lovable and funny mother, Peggy. Very well written and expertly narrated. Highly recommended.

4 Sisters ... 4 very different women

Would you listen to How To Survive Your Sisters again? Why?

Yes. Ms. Klett's narration brings this story to life and I loved all of the accents and emotions she gave to each of the characters.

Have you listened to any of Elizabeth Klett’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is the second book of Ms. Klett's that I have listened too. The first was Me and My Ghoulfriends. That book was set in the United States and Ms. Klett's narration there was spot on. As this book is set in England, I would have to say that Ms. Klett is a very talented narrator. Her ability to make one think that she is English in this book and American in the other is amazing.

Any additional comments?

This book is different from the most recent of the 'chic lit' books I have listened to. This one has more substance to it. It isn't just a book where the main character falls for someone and along the way has a wacky adventure or two. How to Survive Your Sisters tells the story of 4 women, each with their own good points and faults. Ms. Campbell has written a well balanced book that makes you laugh, cry and think. Each sister's story meshes well with the others and between the writing and Ms. Klett's narration you are drawn in and want to keep listening to see what happens next.

I would recommend this book to someone who enjoys a light 'chic lit' type story but who also likes a deeper book too. This is a story I would listen to again.

Titillating rollercoaster of dysfunction and love!

If you could sum up How To Survive Your Sisters in three words, what would they be?

Sophisticated, Funny, and Believable. I was astonished by how much dysfunction, drama, love, anger, mistakes, and resolutions Ms. Campbell is able to fit into one family, never feeling far-fetched or reality-show-fake.

What did you like best about this story?

I have never been treated to a book that makes you feel as though there are four protagonists or central characters… four would-be first-person accounts of the events which involve each, complete with unique perspectives, limitations, emotions, drives, damage, and redeeming qualities. Ms. Campbell masterfully understands and translates the innermost thoughts, feelings, and motivations of them all - she must have had help from several sisters! All this, done seamlessly, believably, and with a secure hold on the reader's interest by weaving in just enough suspense and mystery to keep you periodically questioning who to root for, and wondering about the final outcome.

What does Elizabeth Klett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Brilliantly narrated by Elizabeth Klett, the listener is treated to a multitude of accents and voices, with such talent and consistency that allows you to attain an intimate level of familiarity with each character.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

At one point, I honestly did not know how Ms. Campbell was going to resolve all of the craziness that she had built into the story. I was scared for whether I would "like" the outcome, but compelled to find out. And I was definitely not disappointed!

Any additional comments?

I highly recommend this book, and will be starting my listen of Ms. Campbell's "Looking for LaLa" on my way home today!!

Fantastic Story of Sisterly Strife and Affection

Any additional comments?

How to Survive Your Sisters by Ellie Campbell is a modern day Little Women, but with grown up sisters aging between late 20's to early-40's. Like in Little Women, there are four Macleod sisters who are as different as strangers. You have a perfectionist, an overweight stressed-out mother, a successful business woman, and a free spirited world traveler. Like all big families, no one ever really forgets past differences, jealousies and resentments. The sisters easily fall into their old ways when they come together for a wedding, but after a close family member dies, the sisters band together to get through the tragedy, which forces them to see each other in a new light.

Having four sisters myself, I could totally relate to this story and easily imagined each one of my sisters as one of the Macleod sisters. As in real life, no matter what happens or is said between the sisters that might be hurtful, my sisters and I always band together in a crisis or when one sister needs special attention or assistance to get through a divorce or hard time.

Elizabeth Klett did a wonderful job narrating. She really brought the characters to life, using a variety of accents and giving each character their own distinct voice. For example, her Scottish brogue for the father was very believable, as was her Aussie accent for one of the sister's boyfriends. Elizabeth was also able to switch genders and generations with ease. Simply put, How to Survive Your Sisters is a fantastic story of sisterly strife and affection.
