Publisher's summary
This is not a book about how to use shot guns and other weapons when intruders evade your living space. There are plenty of books addressing the practical and legal aspects of that kind of defense.
This is a book about more passive ways to be safe in your home. This book talks about strategies for keeping the bad guys out and what you might do if they get in.
Home self-defense is not something we like to think about. We like to think of ourselves as safe when come home and shut the door. I personally don't want to injure or kill anybody, even if they are an intruder.
Still there are more and more stories in the news about people being killed in the own homes by intruders. Just last night there was home security video on the National News of two men breaking into an occupied home. They armed themselves with kitchen knives and went upstairs to do who knows what to a grandmother and child.
Somehow the grandma and child retreated to a secure room and the potential killers fled. Why they fled we may never know.
There are many thousands of stories where the occupants were raped, murdered, or tortured just for the fun and or the profit. Police used to say that the home intruders are almost always known by the victims. That it was drug or gang related.
Nowadays this is often true but a growing number of victims are just chosen randomly or accidentally or mistakenly. This booklet will discuss some ideas for increasing home safety.
Disclaimer:
Although I have a BA degree in Criminal Justice; I am not an expert in crime or self-defense. Be that as it may, I am a keen observer of human behavior and crime. After decades of watching and listening to friends, strangers and criminals; I have developed some strategies and philosophies that may make us all a little safer.

Story
The most RJ Young knew about guns was that they could get him killed. Until, recently married to a white woman and in desperate need of a way to relate to his gun-loving father-in-law, Young does the unimaginable: He accepts Charles's gift of a Glock. Let It Bang is the compelling story of the author's unexpected obsession - he eventually becomes an NRA-certified pistol instructor - and of his deep dive into the heart of America's gun culture: what he sees as the domino effect of White fear, White violence, Black fear, rinse, repeat.

Joe Barboza knew that there were two requirements for getting inducted into the Mafia. You had to be Sicilian. And you had to commit a contract killing. The New Bedford-born mobster was a proud Portuguese, not Sicilian, but his dream to be part of La Cosa Nostra proved so strong that he thought he could create a loophole. Barboza’s legacy, buried for years thanks to the murders or deaths of its participants, is finally coming to light and being told in its unvarnished brutality by one of America’s most respected true crime writers.

Story
The most common triggers for homicide are fear, rage, revenge, money, lust, and, more rarely, sheer madness. This isn’t an exact science, of course. Any given murder can have multiple triggers. Sex and revenge seem to be common partners in crime. This book offers my memories of homicide cases that I investigated or oversaw. In each case, I examine the trigger that led to death. I chose this theme for the book because even though the why of a murder case may not be critical in an investigation, it can sometimes lead us to the killer.

Story
On August 14, 1975, eight daring thieves ransacked 148 massive safe-deposit boxes at a secret bank used by organized crime, La Cosa Nostra, and its associates in Providence, Rhode Island. The crooks fled with duffel bags crammed full of cash, gold, silver, stamps, coins, jewels, and high-end jewelry. The true value of the loot has always been kept secret, partly because it was ill-gotten to begin with, and partly because there was plenty of incentive to keep its true worth out of the limelight.
