About this listen

Drive to live, ride to die. On the dusty highways of the near future, Mark and Caitlin go on a camping trip with several other college kids, though what starts as a vacation swiftly becomes a nightmare, as they are assaulted by members of the Royal Barons, a violent road gang. The Barons are living out the Grail Quest of Arthurian legend across the backroads and lonely highways of this land, looting and murdering everyone who crosses their path. Caitlin is kidnapped and at the mercy of their depraved leader, while Mark, left for dead, finds himself in the company of a gunslinging stranger hellbent on getting revenge from behind the wheel of her muscle car. The hunt is on. A high-octane tale of violence and horror on the merciless highway.

Short but Decent Horror Story

I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I liked the story for the most part, but I thought the "Modern Grail Quest" thing was odd. I mean these bikers may have been on a quest for the Grail, but there was nothing noble, or knightly about them. I did enjoy the characters and the action. Persephone Rose does a good job but a couple of his voices were over-the-top. If you want a quick, violent horror audio book, it isn't a bad choice.

Very interesting story idea. Modern Grail Quest

What did you love best about Highway Gods?

The story idea was great and could have been extended with some more of the Arthurian legend and the knights of the round table thrown in. I would have loved to have read this. I really enjoyed the revenge aspect of the to hero characters.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

The plot moved swiftly along. Lots of action with a sprinkle of drama. Most characters were not fleshed out to their potential (IMO) but the ones that were, were great. I would have liked to learn more about the King and his knights.

What does Persephone Rose bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Persephone Rose brought about an exuberance and excitement for the story. His narration lent an urgency to the action. Gave a faster pace than would have been present in just reading the story yourself.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, and I did. Straight through.

Any additional comments?

Bring on the Second installment

I loved this story. It had it all, excitement historical allusion and is jam packed with action. It is short enough to guarantee a sequel, one that I would gladly pay for. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.

Totally Bizarre Fun

If you're looking for 'classy horror' I'd look somewhere else. If you're looking for a gruesome, weird, otherworldly horror then you're in the right place! "Highway Gods" is certainly unlike anything I've read before. It's sort of like 'From Dusk till Dawn' in that it starts out clearly placed in the real world before it spins off into a crazy, otherworldly nightmare. I would recommend this story to listeners who like truly bizarre horror content.

Fun little Road Trip

Highway Gods by Edward Teach was a really fun and unexpected delight. It is one of those short stories that is really hard to describe without giving away too much and spoiling the whole thing. Starts with two sisters on a road trip to Vegas. One is abducted by some creeps in an airstream travel trailer. The other sister tries to chase them down but is wrecked by the trailers minions. She finds her sisters body with the heart missing. And so begins a tale of revenge and supernatural mystery. I recommend this story for the fun and overall crazy good time.

The narration is by Persephone Rose. This is the first time is have heard this narrator but I did enjoy the performance and look forward to further performances from this narrator.

Fun story, but better to read on this one

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I personally didn't care for the narration on this title. I think it would have been more enjoyable with a different narrator.

What didn’t you like about Persephone Rose’s performance?

I thought that the voice acting was over the top and too inconsistent. Characters would start with an accent or inflection and then just drop it while talking, and characters had voices that were not as they were described. For me it just didn't work.

Any additional comments?

A fun new take on a fantasy holy grail story, that is both a revenge flick and action movie. It is short and moves at a clip, easy to read in a single sitting. Would definitely recommend reading the book, as the narration really took away from the ride the book takes you on.

Pass

Highway Gods is bad b movie horror flick in print. It has all the one dimensional elements needed to occupy a youthful mind, but if you are looking for more than that, I suggest you look elsewhere.

The narrator did a pretty good job of creating mood in his performance and breathing a little more drama into the scenes, but it's not enough to make it worth your time.
