About this listen

Sent to live with a wealthy family on a West Indies plantation, Rachel carries with her a past shrouded in mystery. Drawn to her grit and fortitude, charming widower and fanciful inventor Henry is willing to overlook the vague explanations about her history. But after years of marriage, Rachel leaves Henry and their oldest son without explanation and sets off for New York City with their other four children. Is her flight the ultimate act of betrayal or one of extraordinary courage? Using real family letters, Laurel Saville reconstructs the secrets, tensions, and longings surrounding Rachel in this densely layered, poignant novel.

Not sure why I finished it

The effect of having multiple characters tell the story caused much redundancy not once, twice, but throughout the book. Editors could have cleaned up a lot of unnecessary repeated events. Definitely not a page turner. Slow to develop. After the first few chapters the mood was of gloom and doom depicting much unhappiness in all the characters. Harry's narrative part did insert some hope & optimism and I think at first I hoped that I in turn would begin to experience a more positive feeling in gleaning insights . Not to be the case. Had a long road trip today so carried on, but now feel I should have invested my time elsewhere.

Meh

I admit I didn't listen to the whole book, but I just couldn't. Henry is a misogynist, Rachel is weak and confused, and I just didn't care how the whole thing turned out. There are so many fabulous books in the world. Why waste your time feeling frustrated and annoyed?

Beautifully written

Would you consider the audio edition of Henry and Rachel to be better than the print version?

Yes, the character voices made the story.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

Very sad story about a woman who couldn't love or express her love for others as a result of tragedies in her own life.

Have you listened to any of Jeff Cummings and Joyce Bean ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

NO

Who was the most memorable character of Henry and Rachel and why?

Rachael because she so wanted to please everyone, but couldn't express her feelings. Because of this she was a very lonely person.
