About this listen
During the next eight weeks, tens of thousands of men, hundreds of airplanes, and dozens of major warships were locked in mortal combat. When it was over, 60,000 Japanese ground troops and most of the carrier air power of the Imperial Navy were annihilated; Japan's leader, Tojo, was thrown out of office in disgrace; and the newly captured enemy airfields were being transformed into launching bases for the B-29s that would carry the conventional and, later, atomic bombs to Japan, turning the land of the Rising Sun into a charred cinder. After the U.S. victory in the Marianas campaign, the road to Tokyo was clearly in sight.

Story
In World War II, over 12,000 Protestant ministers, Catholic priests, and Jewish rabbis left the safety of home to join the Chaplain Corps, following the armed forces into battle across Europe, Asia, North Africa, and the high seas. These are the personal stories of some of the bravest and most selfless men who served. All of them battled the pain of separation from their own loved ones as they gave some of the best years of their lives to keep the military personnel spiritually awake, morally fit—and prepared to make the journey from this world to the next without fear or despair.

Story
On Easter Sunday, April 1, 1945, more than 184,000 US troops began landing on the only Japanese home soil invaded during the Pacific war. Just 350 miles from mainland Japan, Okinawa was to serve as a forward base for Japan's invasion in the fall of 1945. Nearly 140,000 Japanese and auxiliary soldiers fought with suicidal tenacity from hollowed-out, fortified hills and ridges. Under constant fire and in the rain and mud, the Americans battered the defenders with artillery, aerial bombing, naval gunfire, and every infantry tool.

The US 8th Air Force came of age in 1944. Story
Following victory in Sicily, while the central command planned the spring 1944 invasion of France, Allied troops crossed into Southern Italy in September 1943, expecting to drive Axis forces north and liberate Rome by Christmas. Italy quickly surrendered but German divisions fiercely resisted, and the hoped-for quick victory descended into one of the most challenging and protracted battles of the entire war. James Holland’s The Savage Storm chronicles the dramatic opening months of the Italian Campaign in unflinching and insightful detail.

Story
The story of the Battle of Saipan has it all. Marines at war: on Pacific beaches, in hellish volcanic landscapes in places like Purple Heart Ridge, Death Valley, and Hell's Pocket, under a commander known as "Howlin' Mad." Naval combat: carriers battling carriers from afar, fighters downing Japanese aircraft, submarines sinking carriers. Marine-army rivalry. Fanatical Japanese defense and resistance. A turning point of the Pacific War. James Hallas reconstructs the full panorama of Saipan in a way that no recent chronicler of the battle has done.

Former Marine and Pacific War veteran Robert Leckie tells the story of the invasion of Okinawa, the closing battle of World War II. Leckie is a skilled military historian, mixing battle strategy and analysis with portraits of the men who fought on both sides to give the listener a complete account of the invasion. Lasting eighty-three days and surpassing D-Day in both troops and material used, the Battle of Okinawa was a decisive victory for the Allies, and a huge blow to Japan. In this stirring account, Leckie provides a complete picture of the battle and its context in the larger war.

Thousands of miles from friendly ports, the US Navy had finally managed to complete the capture of Guadalcanal from the Japanese in early 1943. Now the Allies sought to keep the offensive momentum won at such a high cost. This is the central plotline running through this page-turning history beginning with the Japanese Operation I-Go and the American ambush of Admiral Yamamoto and continuing on to the Allied invasion of New Georgia, northwest of Guadalcanal in the middle of the Solomon Islands and the location of a major Japanese base.

The Roman gladiator has long been a figure of fascination. Portrayed frequently in fine art and popular culture alike, the gladiator is both a real part of history and a legend of a romanticized past. We know that these men entertained Roman audiences by fighting in dangerous and often deadly games. But who were the gladiators? What were their lives like? And why do they continue to have such a strong hold on our imagination, centuries after the fall of the Roman Empire?

Christmas is the single biggest annual event on the planet, a time for merry-making, over-indulgence, peace, goodwill, and the occasional family row. It’s as comfortable and familiar as a pair of old shoes and yet still glittery and exciting. But what do you really know about it? It’s stuffed full of traditions and rituals that most of us have been observing all our lives without having the slightest idea of where they come from.

Nothing new, needs an edit.
A lot of basic detail is just wrong, tactics or use of gear is just wrong and shortcomings are mentioned but causes not explained. For example LCVP (Landing Craft Vehicle Personnel, the basic ramped landing craft) is used interchangeably with ATVP (Amphibious Tracked Vehicle Personnel, the basic personnel carrier that could traverse the beach and move inland). If you're writing a book about a seminal amphibious campaign it is incumbent on the historian to be acquainted with the important differences which dictate employment. He confuses LST (Landing Ship Tank, with claim shell ramp in the bow and needing a beach to disgorge its vehicle cargo) and LSD (Landing Ship Dock, with its ramp in the stern and its ability to flood its well deck so its cargo of preloaded landing craft of various types can swim out). Form follows function and belies a basic misunderstanding of amphibious usage. These kinds of casual mistakes are common to both amateur and even professional historians with no actual military experience and would be immediately obvious to anyone with amphibious experience. With such cavalier disregard for the tools of the trade its casts doubts on larger conclusions which are largely predicated by the means at hand. In the meantime useful lines of inquiry, like why was naval gunfire still largely ineffectual with rare but notable exceptions, or why despite state of the art aerial photography and analysis, were maps issued to the troops so bad and lacking in important topographical detail--like the presence of a large swamp in front of a pre-planned objective to be assaulted by tanks on D-Day?
On the other hand the narration was excellent and in no way detracted from the narrative, but also could not overcome the errors in the text.

Good, but Not Great, Story of Little Known Invasio
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
It was a more in-depth look at the invasions and the fact that Adm King focused on the Marianas early on in the war. It is pretty disjointed in the beginning. There is not much about the individuals involved in the fighting. The book talks about them and their situations, but not much about any one. You need stamina to get through the whole book.
What aspect of Peter Ganim’s performance would you have changed?
He is pretty monotone in the beginning. He got better as time went on, or I got more used to it.
Was Hell Is Upon Us worth the listening time?
Yes, if you need in-depth information about these invasions, though you will be tempted to quit listening.
Any additional comments?
The pronunciation of the town and geographic names on Saipan is atrocious. I don't know if this is due to the narrator or the author. If it is from the author, he might have used a Japanese map. Its not anything you might notice unless you lived there, but it drove me nuts.

Great story of an important battle
Brooks account of the various battles in the Marianas is compelling and well researched. And very readable. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in the Pacific campaigns.

The descriptions of conditions, and sites, smell, and mind set.

A good story teller with a 40's kind of way.

I like to strech it out over a couple days. I look forward to sitting back closing my eyes and let my ears fill my mind.

Much more than a historical recap
Interesting narrative describes the battles, results, strategy and politics on both sides of the battlefield.

Adequate
Would you try another book from Victor Brooks and/or Peter Ganim?
If another book were offered by this author, I would definitely make it a point to listen to the preview in its' entirety before purchasing. I found a few of the historical facts to be incorrect, such as referring to Herman Kossler (the captain of the USS Cavalla which sunk the Japanese carrier Shokoku) as James Kossler. Mistakes like this bother me on two levels: first and foremost, this gentleman was awarded the Navy Cross for this fantastic battle action, the least we can do is get his name correct. Secondly, when I see such a glaring error that is easy to research it leads me to wonder what other inaccuracies are contained in the work.
Another aspect I did not care for was the constant comparisons of segments of this battle to the American Civil War. One or two references was sufficient; after the first dozen or so I found myself starting to laugh as yet another comparison would be made in this regard. It got to the point of enough already, I can't believe he's trying to draw this comparison again!
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The tone of the narrators voice was pleasant enough, but his overall speech was so robotic it sounded like it could have been a synthesized computer voice.
Any additional comments?
I am sure that this author is a fine man, but I would submit that perhaps he could research and produce his books more carefully and that he should refrain from overly tiresome references to another war or time period.
