Story
Young Alvin was born the seventh son of a seventh son. By his birthright, he possesses magical powers and is destined to become something great, perhaps even a Maker. Indeed, Alvin is special. But the boy remains vulnerable to dark forces who reach out to destroy him and are willing to do anything to keep him from growing up. Carefully weaving the lore and the folk-magic of the men and women who settled a continent—as well as the beliefs of the tribes who were there before them—Orson Scott Card has created a fascinating alternate frontier America.

Story
When Runnel leaves his mountain valley to head for the great city of the water mages, he has no idea of his own magical talents. But he soon finds that without meaning to, he complicates and then endangers the lives of everyone he comes to know and care about. For when it comes to magic, there are rules and laws, and the untrained mage-to-be must be careful not to tap into deep forces and ancient enmities. Otherwise, other people might end up paying the price for his mistakes.

Story
It was a miracle of science that permitted human beings to live, if not forever then for a long, long time. Some people, anyway. The rich, the powerful, they lived their lives at the rate of one year every 10. Some created two societies: that of people who lived out their normal span and died, and those who slept away the decades, skipping over the intervening years and events. It allowed great plans to be put into motion. It allowed interstellar empires to be built.

Now he steps a little closer to the present day with this chilling look at a near-future scenario: a new American Civil War. The American Empire has grown too fast, the fault lines at home are stressed to the breaking point, and the war of words between Right and Left has collapsed into a shooting war.

Decent
Card has maintained a good story, though it is very slow moving. The great, amorphous mystery of the Crystal City still lies almost entirely in mystery at the end of the book, and not particularly in a way that illicits a grest deal of further interest. Rather, it has become mildly bothersome to have that plot point almost entirely put to one side for the last two or three books. The series ends up feeling more like a collection of random stories: "The Adventures of Alvin" or something, told in a very episodic fashion.
The development of the central plot is excruciatingly slow, often completely derailed in favor of seemingly random "side-quest" story lines. They do inevitably point to the Crystal City, but only insofar as Alvin accumulates more people that will be part of the City. Other than that, there seems to be little more connection.
Apart from that flaw, the story is pretty good. There is much less anti-white vitriol in this one. Of course, the hateful slave-owners are depicted in typical stereotypical fashion, and false religious Christians who are actually evil also continue to have center stage, but this time in the context of witch trials. This latter portion ultimately makes ridiculous the concept of Satan or any religiously traditional understanding of the supernatural, which I find to be rather disrespectful of religious ideas.
But, the story continues with new drama and satisfying resolutions to many intense situations. The romance is average. It's there but not very engaging.
All in all, it was far less offensive than the other books in the series, but it was not extremely interesting either. It was good, but only in an average way.

What a fantastic nack.
I am so glad to have read this story. Of all of the nacks, I have been fascinated with Torch-ing from the very 1st book, 7th son. I am not saying that Margaret/Peggy is my favorite character, But I do like her nack. And as always, excellent performance.

Wonderful
Mr.Card creates a fantastic fantastical fictitious history of America! His use of historical figures working around his narrative is unique and quite excellent! Alvin Maker is as all would hope to be, knack or no knack he gets two thumbs up from me!

Great performance
I really do love Orson Scott card as a storyteller. And this cast did a superb job of bringing this book to life. I found myself making excuses to put off something else so that I could continue listening to the ongoing events at the moment in this novel.
