Publisher's summary

Featured title on PBS's The Great American Read in 2018

Lemuel Gulliver, English surgeon turned ship captain, embarks on four fantastic voyages, each a clash with strange beings and cultures - from the eccentric to the odious. Island by island, he meets the savage but tiny Lilliputians, the hideous Yahoos, a stable of talking horses, a race of decrepit immortals, and the ghosts of Julius Caesar and Homer.

A parody of the popular seafaring narratives of his time, a harsh judgment against inherently corrupt human nature, and a satire of the ways of England, Swift's masterpiece was written "to vex the world rather than divert it." For generations, it has inspired it.

Parody as a travel story

The stories are political commentary on empires and kingdoms at the time of writing. Unfortunately the references didn't make much sense to me since 300 years have passed since the writing. The stories that are not about politics were interesting, like the Yahoo island of horses, and the classic story where Gulliver is a giant compared to the little people. The reader did a good job.

an irionic parodie of empire

some parts are very funny, even in the twenty-first century some of the crticism is still relevant 300 years later

Colbert report for a different time period

this is the first ever political satire. and therefore a precurser to a very popular modern genre. this version is not indented for children. in fact children will be bored to tear in some parts. I suggest listing to the abridged versions in youth highlighting the Lilliput's and Brobdingnag. then later when able to understand the satire of Balnibarbi, Luggnagg & of course the Houyhnhyms. this will tie nostalgia with the new discoveries to enhance the experience. that what I did and I have a new revelation and enjoy the book every time I read it. published in 1726 in secret, about colonial Europe and human nature as a whole at a time when it could have been considered treason and herescy. being a satire of a different time period and written in the travel journel style, a no longer written genre popular of the day. it is a fair to say the novel is obsolete to modern listeners. I perpose a different conjecture. if your like me your a little disillusioned by the current state of politics in America. I think you will enjoy this book. made me feel a lot better about the way we run our nation. as for the out dated style I found it similar to science fiction. ergo Star trek where new civilizations are encountered. I am not going to tell you my conjectures of the views in the book. because I hate being told what to think. Swift is not Suttle, and their are several study guides online. this book had been discected and debated for centuries by greater minds then mine. I will tell you not to expect any profound answers for as Swift confessed the perpose of the story is to vex the world. the narration was a little annoying. but I believe Gulliver himself is the biggest joke of all. swift being a irish clergyman the ideological opposite of a English surgeon and meant to be ridaclued. in retrospect the David Hyde Pierce version might be better narrated with Niles Crane's sarcasim. cowardly, prideful and misongynestic I found myself disliking him by books end helped by the narrators voice. this was a production I really enjoyed all the same.

Gulliver’s Travels

The story started out well but I got very bored and lost interest as the travels went on. The beginning travels were interesting but the later travels not so much. I listened to most of the book but lost interest 2/3 of the way through. The narrator was fantastic, I really enjoyed listening to him, he is why I kept listening to the book I think.
