About this listen
“Quick, clean action, solid character work and pacing. This series is worth your time.” (Jim Butcher, number one New York Times best-selling author of The Dresden Files)
Another day, another hijacked body. And just 13 hours to solve a murder…Detective Vincent Graves has made a habit of dying. Waking up in someone else’s body isn’t pleasant, especially when it's inside a coffin with tons of dirt pressing down on it. Once he’s out, he learns his soul has 13 hours to find the borrowed body’s killer.
With the help of a brilliant FBI agent, Vincent’s quest for clues leads to a looming supernatural presence. And escaping the dark threat may be impossible with his ever-ticking clock…
Can Vincent close the case in time, or will a powerful being make him rest in peace for good?
Grave Beginnings is the first book in The Grave Report urban fantasy detective series. If you like paranormal twists, hard-boiled investigators, and noir-style magic, then you’ll love R.R. Virdi’s paranormal investigator series.
“His stuff is badass!” (Larry Correia, New York Times best-selling author)

A man. His ex-girlfriend's cat. A sadistic game show unlike anything in the universe: a dungeon crawl where survival depends on killing your prey in the most entertaining way possible. In a flash, every human-erected construction on Earth - from Buckingham Palace to the tiniest of sheds - collapses in a heap, sinking into the ground. The buildings and all the people inside have all been atomized and transformed into the dungeon: an 18-level labyrinth filled with traps, monsters, and loot.

Story
When a magical plague is released in a Depression-era New York soup kitchen, private detective Alex Lockerby finds himself in a desperate hunt to catch a madman before he can strike again. His investigations lead Alex to a famous thief, a daring heist, and the search for a mythic book of ancient magic, but none of that brings him any closer to finding the man responsible for the massacre. With the police and New York’s Council of Sorcerers desperate to find the culprit, Alex becomes a suspect himself, thanks to his ties to the priest who ran the soup kitchen.

Story
There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

In the world’s most magical metropolis where spirits run noodle shops and cash-strapped dragons stage photo-ops for tourists, people still think fairies are nothing but stories, and that’s exactly how the fairies like it. It’s a lot easier to feast on humanity’s dreams when no one believes you exist. But while this arrangement works splendidly for most fair folk, Lola isn’t one of the lucky ones.

My name is Leah, and I am a Cazador. Trained to hunt and kill vampires over 300 years ago, my training became essential once I became one of those monsters. The underbelly of the supernatural world has begun to bleed into the human world, and journalist Rachel Sambrook is asking too many dangerous questions. Unwittingly, she's revealed a conspiracy I had hoped would never become a reality: using vampire blood for human experiments. Since moving to Mystic Harbor, Maine, I've made it my life's mission to avoid Reese Blackburn at all costs. Sure, he has cheekbones that could cut glass, not to mention bedroom eyes that could melt any girl into a puddle on the floor. Too bad that doesn't change the fact he's completely stab-worthy. When a fun night out on the town turns deadly, I quickly discover the quaint little hamlet of Mystic Harbor houses more than sandy beaches and adorable B&Bs. Beneath the New England charm rests a world where shifters, demons, vampires, and angelic hunters all vie for power.

Story
An attack in the dark. The loss of a love. Waking up hung over in a ditch. These are the things that make a hero, especially if that hero is Quincy Harker, immortal wizard, snarky bastard, and general badass. Histories collects two short stories and one short novella giving a peek behind the curtain at the man, the myth, the legend that is Quincy Harker, as well as the origin story of one of his most popular cohorts, Jo Henry.

All legends are born of truths. And just as much lies. These are mine. Judge me for what you will. But you will hear my story first. I buried the village of Ampur under a mountain of ice and snow. Then I killed their god. I've stolen old magics and been cursed for it. I started a war with those that walked before mankind and lost the princess I loved, and wanted to save. I've called lightning and bound fire. I am legend. And I am a monster.

Great Book
I wasn't sure about this book at first, but after the first chapter I was hooked. The characters make a few more quips than I usually prefer but other than that I throughly enjoyed this book. The ideas were fresh, the narration was good and I'm looking forward to Book 2. Definitely worth your time.

Solid narration/performance, more plot holes than Swiss Cheese
The narration is solid, but the story will ask you pretty regularly to “take things on faith”; leaving you with a cheap feeling after choosing to buy into so many plot holes.

I think this may be the most unique storyline I have ever read. You feel for the main character - and the police detective that joins in to help him. It is an incredible story line - get ready for lots of action - sci-fi type characters... and an amazing ending. NOW - don't worry about the sci-fi - although the characters are often unique - even if you don't like that type of story, I found this to be more of a who-done-it with a twist. The story is amazing.

Too much information
Too much repetitive description. Humor unnecessary and distracting from action. Love the character concept. Quantum Leap with a twist.

Great start to a series
Vincent Graves is a detective who inhabits the body of a murdered human. He woke up in the body of Museum Curator Norman Smith. Now he must break his way out of Norman's coffin in order to investigate what paranormal entity killed him. Graves' contact is a guy named Church who is a powerful entity that sets a time limit. In this case, Graves has thirteen hours to discover exactly what killed Norman.
This is the first book in The Grave Report series. Graves is a witty, sarcastic, and very likable character. He doesn't remember much of his life before he died. He just knows that when he wakes up in a body, he must contact Church to get his marching orders. Graves is working the case, talking to Norman's co-workers, when he clashes with FBI Agent Camilla Ortiz. She has a lot of questions about an incident with a tiger, but when she witnesses something you don't see every day, she begins to help Graves with his investigation.
As many reviewers have said, this series reminds me of The Dresden Files. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Travis Baldree who was the perfect voice for Graves. I want to go back and listen to it again sometime. I'm sure I missed many details in the story because my mind was on something else. I have to say I was entertained by the story and plan to continue the series. My rating: 4 Stars.

harry dresdren similarities
The main character has a count town timer watch that is mentioned frequently in the beginning of the book then isn't mentioned again till everything is wrapped up in the end. I wish it was mentioned throughout the entire book to create more of a sense of urgency.

Formulaic and yet still fun
Yes, it’s another white guy with unique powers, battling supernaturals, paired up with a lady detective.
Yes, the feeling is sarcastic noir, with a thing against government authority.
Yes, there are head scratching plot issues if you think too much on them.
Yes, there are easy solutions ignored for the sake of extending the plot.
(Example: he’s dug himself out of a grave, again, and bemoans how hard it’ll be to figure out
whose body he’s occupying… and yet doesn’t think to check whose name is on the tombstone?)
Yes, there’s the frustrating premise of Vincent blindly doing his supernatural job
without understanding the hows or the whys.
(Not to mention that the hows or whys change arbitrarily, like when Church gives him 24 hours
to solve the crime, and when Vincent complains, Church makes it 13 hours)
Yes, there’s too much focus on the fight scenes and not enough on world building.
Nonetheless, it’s a formula that went down easy.
I enjoyed this just like I enjoyed Quantum Leap in the 80s without caring whether it all made sense.

Good enough
Okay, I know that mostly the stars seem to be rated "if it's not 5 stars it's probably not worth it" but since I actually try to go for a bit more nuanced reviews than yes/no rest assured that even if I give something only four or three stars it doesn't mean I think it's not worth one's time. This one mostly is, the writing is good, the characters interesting, the plot a bit simplistic but not bad, and the way the author uses the fantasy creatures gives them some freshness. The only things about the story I didn't like that much is that I would have liked the main character doing a bit more investigating, slightly less fighting - I do generally like noir, and I do like action, but for some reason this went just a bit over the top for me - plus
Okay, I guess this needs bit of a SPOILER WARNING - no details, but the complaint does reveal a bit of the plot
I did find the end boss fight too long. He finds the monster, they fight. Then they fight. Then they fight some more... okay, maybe it's just my age, and the fact that I am not much of a gamer, perhaps that would be more to the taste of younger generations who are. I would have preferred that end fight cut into a few pieces, like they fight, he has to escape the fight or the monster does, then he maybe has to do some investigating to find the monster again - or another way to defeat it - before fighting it again. Or the monster finds him. Not just one extended long fight.
END OF THE SPOILER
So, all in all: story is good, but not a perfect fit for my taste. The narrator is good. I think the combination made it well worth listening to.

Repetitive, not my cup of coffee
This is included and narrated by Travis Baldree, far and away one of the best narrators I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. But the storytelling wasn't for me. One-liners, action, and witty conversation is part of the noir style; spending several minutes explaing the thought process behind every statement and action....not so much. Tried to make it to the end, but just couldn't do it.
