Publisher's summary

Jessie Boone is a self proclaimed bad boy and doesn’t march to the beat of anyone’s drum, but his own. Growing up in less than desirable circumstances has made him no stranger to the hard knock life and his determination to leave it behind is fierce. When he finds himself transferred to East Franklin High School, he sees his opportunity to use his athletic ability to snag a college football scholarship, but Forbes Henderson, the player Jessie means to replace isn’t giving up his spot willingly.

In fact, Forbes is willing to go to extreme measures to retain his place as first string quarterback. When Forbes’ malicious plan to injure his replacement fails, Jessie is furious and determined to show him he messed with the wrong person; not only is he going to take the position of first string quarterback, he’s going to take his girl, too. Claire Deveraux is perfection at it’s best.

She is beautiful, intelligent and unaware she just became Jessie Boone’s conquest as revenge against her boyfriend, Forbes Henderson. Like her flawless performance as the perfect daughter and student, Claire’s production of being the perfect girlfriend has everyone fooled, except Jessie Boone, and she fears this tattooed bad boy will see her secret desire to explore his crude threats and promises to rock her perfect world. If she decides to give in to one uninhibited moment with Jessie, will she learn too late that it was all an act of vengeance or will Jessie learn the taste of first love is sweeter than that of revenge?

Editorial reviews

Revenge and romance collide in Georgia Cates’ Going Under. Troubled high schooler Jessie Boone is out to win himself a football scholarship and, hopefully, a chance for a better life. Then there’s Claire Deveraux, straight-A sweetheart of first-string quarterback Forbes Henderson. Seemingly worlds apart, the two cross paths as Boone sets out to steal Forbes’ quarterback job… and his girlfriend. Portraying Boone, Adam Saunders exudes a brooding, macho reserve typical of hotheaded jock culture. Merritt Hicks is equally convincing as Deveraux, delivering sass and burgeoning sexuality. Indeed, Going Under's seedy, hyper-realistic storyline is at times unsettling: Boone’s motives are downright sinister, while Deveraux is largely a sexual status symbol to her dueling suitors. This is urban fiction at its most stark and jilted.

Loved it

This was a good story and sex was not the main theme. I loved both readers and they did an excellent job. Highly recommend

HS romance

Super low on 🔥scale but cute hs romance. Took star away for the cheating and the dragging along of Jesse. Also, made it through but the narrator for female had a lisp that was tough to overhear and wasn’t upbeat as I would like. Male voices were spot on though.

Overall: Good with some minor suggestions

I enjoyed this story- I think the description for it is slightly misleading. I mean it gets the general idea but whoever wrote the summary it seems didn't read past the first 5 chapters.

I liked their relationship, it was cute and innocent until it wasn't. (btw if anyone is looking for sauce then this is not it) this book is sweet- not spicy.

The ONLY small critiques I have for the story, is that I wish I would have gotten more of a closure moment between Jessie and his Grandma.
I also would have liked the epilogue to be about them going to college together and maybe getting married. Just a personal preference but I kind of dislike how most romances end with a baby.
I am def going to read Peyton's story in book 2. I liked her humor in this one and I'm excited to see what Georgia Cates has in store for her.

Good book/ so-so female narrator

I really enjoyed this book but the female narrator’s voice was much too mature for a 17 yr old girl. The narrator sounded like she was 40+ yrs old which made it a little weird.

This is a book I read over and over.

Sometimes when you've read a book so many times, it becomes like a movie in your head. My opinion is that is why books are always better than the movie. I thought the audio version might feel the same way. I was relieved to be wrong. It was perfect. I was left grinning and happy sighing.

Captivating

This book hooked me from the start!! Claire is beautiful, smart, wealthy, and dating the starting quarterback. Jesse is the picture perfect bad boy transfer student from the wrong side of the tracks. He’s gorgeous, intelligent, extremely athletic, and, after his first run in with Forbes, Claire’s arrogant boyfriend, wants not only the starting quarterback position but also to steal Claire from Forbes. The instant chemistry is off the charts with these two, but Jesse is forced to push Claire away in order to keep her safe.
The narration was perfect for these characters. I felt the emotional tug from the beginning and couldn’t stop listening! This is the first book I’ve listened to from this author and there narrators, but I’ve already added the second book in this series to my library. Also, I like that even though it’s a series, it’s not a cliffhanger.
Overall, I loved this book and would recommend it if you like sweet romances.

Surprisingly Good!

This was my first read of Georgia Cates’ work, and I wasn’t prepared to enjoy it as much as I did! New Adult isn’t my go-to sub genre of romance, but I felt Cates’ did a better job than many authors writing as those in their late teens present themselves, think, and act. It’s really a sweet story. I’m looking forward to the next title. Narration was exemplary!

Jesse & Claire

*****Spoiler Alert*****

Audible Premium Plus borrow 04-29-21; audiobook review. Dual POV. Standalone and book 1 of 2 in the Going Under duet. No cliffhanger. I really enjoyed both narrators. High school romance. Trigger warnings: drugs, alcohol, murder, attempted murder.

Great story about a pair of high school seniors. Claire was adopted by a wealthy couple soon after her addict mom abandoned her after delivering her, is the valedictorian hopeful, head cheerleader, dating the quarterback, and all around good girl. Jesse transfers to a new school in a wealthy area after he almost died in a drug deal gone wrong. Jesse is a phenomenal ambidextrous quarterback that his coach is excited to have join his football team. Jesse's poor background and football skill make him the target of Forbes, the current quarterback & Claire's current boyfriend. The two quickly fall for each other, overcome family obstacles and are married with a new daughter in the epilogue.

The final chapter is the first 2 chapters of book 2 in the duet which is Payton's story. Payton is Claire's best friend. JP
