Publisher's summary

Brooks discusses her latest historical novel with award-winning journalist John Hockenberry, the host of WNYC's new morning show, The Takeaway. The book, inspired by a real rare illuminated manuscript, imagines its life from its creation in medieval Seville to the present, through the lives of the people who come into contact with the book.

Actress Rita Wolf will perform an excerpt.

Editorial reviews

Author Geraldine Brooks borrows from history to create the novel People of the Book. Australian book conservator Hannah Heath studies a Jewish prayer book that has survived politically turbulent eras. Heath finds tiny figments of the past in the book’s binding, and through them encounters the places and peoples that make the book’s provenance. The vignettes’ vivid characters speak alongside Heath, and their presence allows the past to reemerge and coexist with the present. Public radio host and journalist John Hockenberry interviews Brooks as she thoughtfully discusses the role of history in her fiction. Classically trained British-Indian actress Rita Wolf narrates an excerpt in her own English accent, but her passionate performance makes it easy to envision the setting and the characters.
