Story
Some people bounce back in response to setbacks; others break. We often think that these responses are hardwired, but fortunately this is not the case. Stoicism offers us an alternative approach. Plumbing the wisdom of one of the most popular and successful schools of thought from ancient Rome, philosopher William B. Irvine teaches us to turn any challenge on its head. The Stoic Challenge, then, is the ultimate guide to improving your quality of life through tactics developed by ancient Stoics, from Marcus Aurelius and Seneca to Epictetus.

A charming set of thought provoking stories
The title says it all! The stories are set in various outdoor, natural contexts, including city streets, and are crafted to reconnect us with past memories, not just of a place or event but also of the people with whom we shared episodes in our lives. It is well written with a breadth of contexts and considerations that embrace the whole of the human experience. Those who read it, perhaps one story per day, or even one per week, will almost certainly have a thought provoking and reflective experience.
The unfortunate negative aspect of the performance experience was primarily the lack of pauses between stories; one finishes, and the next starts almost without taking a breath! This was the pattern throughout, with a few rare exceptions where there was a second or so when "Pause" could have actually been pressed before the next story began! There were also several places where "continuity" was pronounced "continue-ity;" the meaning was understandable but it was a distraction each time it was read that way.

Take Time to Reflect on Fond Memories
I loved listening to these heartwarming stories. These feel-good stories are set in nature and are crafted in a way that nurtures relationships and memories. The older we get, the more our memory and brain functions start to decline. And these stories provide a fun and interactive way to sharpen the mind. I liked the nostalgic stories and the prompts to engage in conversation and reflection. I did wish there was a pause after each story though, to give the listener a little more time to take it in before moving on the the next one. But other than that, I thought the experience overall was thought-provoking.
