Publisher's summary

Forbidden love. Duty. Danger. Will love be enough to conquer all?

Max, Lord Rotham, has been browbeaten by his mother, the Duchess of Davenmere, to marry her choice for him. The more he resists, the more she schemes to force the match upon him. He became connected with the beauty Hope Whitford when her and her sisters were entangled in a dangerous situation, and while he feels drawn to her, he is not ready to commit to a lifetime because of his mother. But is losing Hope worth spiting his mother?

Hope Whitford, the second of five sisters, has always dreamed of a grand London Season and match, despite their modest claims to the upper class. Their new guardian places them center stage in the middle of the ton and in close proximity to its most eligible bachelors. When they are invited to a house party at a ducal estate, it looks as though her dreams may come true . . . except someone means to make certain that never happens . . . no matter what.

Loved this book

Elizabeth Johns and Alex Wyndham are one of my favorite audio duos. Ms Johns is masterful at spinning a story with delightful characters and entertaining repartee. I anticipated excitedly the release of this book and was not disappointed.

Enjoyable and humorous

I enjoyed this story just as much as I did the first. The plot was well developed but not overly heavy with the right balance of humor. The characters are charming to boot. I saw another review that mentioned it being unbelievable that someone could be sick and weak with a wasting disease but also ride horses. I think anyone who has cared for a terminally ill loved one can attest that this is not beyond reason. There are good days and bad and the person can surprise you with what they feel like doing on those good days. Anyhow, the author still emphasizes the duke’s illness and weakness even on his best days so I did not find this an obstacle.

Regardless, I don’t think any of these books are intended to be deep, series stories. I believe they are meant to be a fun and engaging combination of romance and mystery with a little danger thrown in. To that end, she succeeds quite well. I look forward to the next installment!

And, as always, Alex Wyndham’s deep voice could make the phone book sound delightful.

If nor for Alex Wyndham

This story is just too drippy romantic and juvenile. It ask too often for the reader to ignore truths, such as one person being bed ridden with a wasting disease who gets up and rides to the hounds. Just poor writing through out.
