Great story and narration

I swear Tom Parker sounds like Grover Gardner! Nice deep voice, and so easy to follow the character changes. Great fun!

Missing

Archer attempts to find a missing woman and finds multiple murder victims instead. Archer, as always, gets beaten up, kissed by beautiful women, and solves the case.

I love Ross McDonald

His vocabulary is so diverse in an older style but his love of human kind is always refreshing in his thrilling style.

Badly edited kindle and audio

The kindle book has numerous errors throughout. Also the audible clips the last words at the end of every chapter. It was a good read but not my favorite by far

Enjoyable Listening

I totally enjoyed listening to this classic Ross Macdonald story, it had great characters that flowed into the story nicely. The Lew Archer series is a good one. Also great narration by Tom Parker, another one of my Audible Plus selections.

Chapter breaks are a small problem

I’m enjoying this series immensely and this one in particular. Quite a great ride with wonderful twists to keep you guessing.

But unlike the previous audiobooks in the series the chapter breaks are a problem. The chapters are generally written to end in tautness, suspense, or even unexpected surprise. They require a break to feel what the author has intended or think about what just happened. This recording does a disservice to the author and the listener by immediately announcing the next chapter without so much as a pause to breathe.

I hope that this is the last time I’ll experience the issue in this series.

That’s a production critique this rating system doesn’t allow for except by using the overall star rating.

Typical

contains the traits of all hardboiled novels: colorful descriptions, misogyny. Ok for what it is...

Great Ross Macdonald

My only complaint is the recording…. It cuts off the end of a chapter too abruptly…. Sometimes the sentences get cut off in the middle of a word.

As good as it gets

Macdonald is a master of the noir mystery, and the reader is fantastic! Don't miss it!
