Publisher's summary

The riveting story of the history-making mission to reach the bottom of all five of the world’s oceans - the ultimate frontier of our planet.

Humankind has explored every continent on earth, climbed its tallest mountains, and gone into space. But the largest areas of our planet remain a mystery: the deep oceans. At over 36,000 feet deep, these areas closest to earth’s core have remained nearly impossible to reach - until now.

Technological innovations, engineering breakthroughs and the derring-do of a unique team of engineers and scientists, led by explorer Victor Vescovo, brought together an audacious global quest to dive to the deepest points of all five oceans for the first time in history.

Expedition Deep Ocean reveals the marvelous and other-worldly life found in the ocean’s five deepest trenches, including several new species that have posed as of yet unanswered questions about survival and migration between oceans. Then there are the newly discovered sea mounts that cause tsunamis when they are broken by shifting tectonic plates and jammed back into the earth’s crust, something that can now be studied to predict future disasters.

Filled with high drama, adventure and the thrill of discovery, Expedition Deep Ocean celebrates courage and ingenuity and reveals the majesty and importance of the deep ocean.

Not Great

At least one blatantly obvious factual error (stating that salt water doesn't freeze). Author seems blind to how government and corporate politics work. Author was very caught up in trying to convince the reader that the characters were 'cool', leaning heavily on titles and accomplishments. The narrator wasn't good either, artificially lowering his voice and sounding cocky and unintelligent when he shouldn't have. Somewhat painful to listen to but I finished it because it's the only account of the expedition that I knew of. Overall, not a good book at all, but the facts are interesting.

most interesting guy alive

This entire story is crazy. The fact that it's a true story makes it so much more crazy. I feel like this brings you on the expedition for the failure and for the succes.

Incredible Journeys

This is an amazing story that reaches beyond any series of earthly expeditions and would qualify as 5 stars all the way in my opinion. These combined dives mark the deepest in all 5 oceans. The story begins with the founder of the project and financier Victor Vescovo to locate a unique engineering staff to create the perfect deep dive vessel and build an international team of world-renowned experts in a variety of technical fields and to accomplish Expedition Deep Ocean and survey past the infamous Hadal zone. The story is a step-by-step process and includes all the challenges learned from each dive such as parts that either malfunctioned or broke. This is a very personal story of Victor Vescovo and his crew. There is as you would expect allot of drama in each dive as Lessons are learned about the Limiting Factor, the name of the Deep dive vessel and the Pressure Drop, the command ship that took it to each destination and controlled its communications and life support. You will follow the Skaff, one of three full ocean depth-capable scientific landers that proceeded each dive where sometimes they landed as expected and other times where lost. The narrator, Eric Dove, puts you in the seat next to Victor as he dives each location. I felt like I was there in the submersible looking at the gauges watching the green board and seeing the bottom of the ocean floor closer to the earth's core than any other vessel had gone. You will learn about the unimaginable challenges, not only technical, but also political in certifying the Limiting Factor and getting the Pressure Deep to each destination port all across the planet. You will not only ride along on both vessels, but also dive to other famous locations such as the Titanic, and search for the wreckage of the famous French submarine the Minerve attempting to determine the cause of it's sinking. You will dive the Red Sea to edge of an underwater volcano. You will experience the true science of new species and life in their domains and wonder how such animals could not only exist at those great depths but flourish. . While on the Pressure Deep you will track storms that will follow you at level 4. Special treat you will meet Dr Kathy Sullivan. First American woman to conduct a spacewalk and dive the Challenger Deep, which is the deepest part of the Mariana Trench. You will meet famous celebrities, like James Cameron of the Deep Sea Challenger, Prince Albert ll who became the deepest-diving Head of State. I can't say enough positive remarks about this audio. If you want to experience what it might have been like to be there, then you will thoroughly enjoy this audio of incredible journeys below 10,925 meters, about 35,843 feet or 6.79 miles.

Fantastic Story!

What an amazing real life adventure. So we’ll told, and very honest in its approach. One of the best audiobooks I’ve ever listened to. This story truly makes one wonder what else mankind can accomplish in the future. Kiddos to all involved!

Good lesson for project managers

Good explication of the problems facing engineering projects. I’m not sure what the Takeaway is but t it was certainly an interesting read. There were a couple of technical mistakes but that is to be expected when non-technical people write about engineering projects. For instance, talking about the increase in speed after installation of a sonar dome on the bow of the test boat, the narrator states that it was due to some sort of “Bernoulli effect.“ In fact, the drag reduction of a bow sonar bulb comes from a reduction in wave resistance.

Absolutely captivating!

I love the Ocean and this was truly an adventure!
I look forward to where they explore next, and to watching the program of this amazing feat when it is released :)

Not what I expected

I thought this book would be more about the ocean but it’s more about the operations and financing for the mission. It wasn’t what I expected, but it was entertaining in its own way.

Adventure and Exploration

Victor Vescovo was determined to be the first person to reach the bottom of each ocean. In order to do so, he had to build a submarine that was capable of withstanding the pressures of the deep. This book takes you on the journey of the idea, the planning, messes, and of course, the adventure.

I really enjoyed this book. It was interesting to hear the backstory behind the plan to reach the bottom of all five oceans. It was cool to hear about the dive near the Titanic too, as the history of that ship has long captured many readers.

Great read, especially if you enjoy natural history.

Disappointing.

Because the TV series has not been released yet, any information regarding wildlife is negligible in this book. The story is about the development and deployment of the submarine. It’s an amazing feat but not what I was looking for. I could have been more interested in a deeper technical discussion of the submarine instead of the sideshows of personal disputes and media rights.

Awesome

Young wrote this perfectly. I'd think of a question and he'd answer it in the next line. Sure it's about a rich dude, but you don't get rich sitting on your rear. Audaces fortuna iuvat! Bravo Vic and Triton.
