About this listen

He's lost his edge....

Photojournalist Cache Calder lives to chase a great story. He's just returned from the Middle East after surviving a suicide bombing that left him injured and grief-stricken. The last thing he wants is to travel to the wilds of Alaska on a "Where Is She Now" Assignment. But when his editor informs him that his subject is former kidnapping victim, Amelia Bennett who jump-started his career 20 years earlier, he packs his bags.

She lives on the Edge....

Mel Bennett's carefully maintained control unravels the moment she meets Cache Calder. Attraction flares for the man who seems to really "know" her. No one at the Edge of Reason Lodge is aware she was the young teenager who'd survived one of the most publicized kidnappings in recent history, and she wants it to stay that way. But she starts to question her heart and her sanity when unexplained incidents begin to happen and a deadly threat returns to finish what he'd started so long ago.

Wanted to like this book

I wanted to like this book more, but little things made it impossible. It’s fine, easy read, romance, Alaskan wild, drama, etc. but nothing special. *Partial SPOILER- But my biggest issue was that the answer to the “mystery” was a character not introduced until they had been exposed. Seriously? Lame.

Feminist grade: A

Really entertaining book! It's part a RomCom, part a romance thriller. It only has minor problematic things for which I cannot take off more than 5 points out of 100. The female characters are pretty darn strong women.

Bad Decisions and Not so Great Narration

The story has a good premise but the lead female character makes some awful decisions. You were a prisoner for 10 months kidnapped by a cult that has scarred you for life, physically and emotionally. When you begin to see signs that someone is terrorizing you again you keep it to yourself? You don't tell your family, crew or guests that they could be in grave danger and just let them wonder around in the wilderness with a possible crazy person? The narration didn't help. Wrong voice for this book, narrator should be doing children's books, not a good fit for suspense.. It was tough to get through and I won't be continuing in the series.

Thrilling Romantic Suspense in Alaska

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, it was a strong emotional story with balance between romance and suspense. It always has really good growth arcs for all the characters and not just the main two. The story felt complete and had depth.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Nicole
Nicole is a secondary character, but she has a strong presence. She made mistakes in the past, but she has owned them and is trying to make right even though her sister and kids aren't making it easy on her.

Lynette and Ramsay were a hoot too. They're ongoing squabble lent a nice lighter note to a darker story.

What about Mia Chiaromonte’s performance did you like?

I really like how she conveyed the emotion behind the words and thoughts. I was right there with the characters. Her pacing was really good too. Each character was distinguishable and her voices weren't a distraction as I listened.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Not really, but not because I wanted to quit or didn't like the book. It is very emotional and has some tough stuff going on so that I needed a break just to regroup. The main character, Mel, thinks she has it all together and that she is in control, but it is obvious she doesn't. It was hard being there and watching her have to go to almost a breaking point before she could really start to heal.

Any additional comments?

This is a story that the reader has to be patient with and has to be in the right frame of mind to appreciate. The female protagonist was harsh, bitter, and rough on people and kept everyone at a distance with the I am in control and invincible attitude. She is a tough woman who I admire for her past hardships that she overcame to a certain extent, but also felt sad for as I read her story. In the face of real danger, she did the stubborn-stupid thing a few times. That being said, it was worth it to stick with her and right through to the end.

Also a warning for those who might have triggers there is a background of cult, capture, and related stuff in the heroine's past.

The narrator…ugh

The narrator for this book is terrible. She reads with the same tone and cadence, with absolutely no inflection in her voice. I mean how can you read a dramatic scene and not change how the characters should sound…that’s awful. And, if I had to hear “Hells bells” one more time I would have wanted to pull my hair out…I was just waiting hear “fiddly sticks”….seriously! The book was just ok, the narrator definitely did not help it at all. Hard pass on the next in the series since it’s read by the same person.
