Publisher's summary

This Volume provides self-test inventories that can operate to assess one’s own driver personality. The items are based on the full classified inventory of the nine zones of driving skills which are also described.

The purpose of these self-test modules is to help drivers reflect on driving situations as social and collective events that are made up of people's needs, thoughts, and actions, and how these affect other drivers.

This interdependence among drivers in traffic must be recognized, perceived, understood, and consciously managed by every driver. Driving psychology is the K-12 and Lifelong driver discipline that helps drivers acquire these positive skills.

Taking the self-test items and inventories given in this volume, and checking your answers with the given answer key, not only gives you a test score of how you did, but more importantly, gets you involved in considering and analyzing a variety of driving issues, facts, and situations. This in itself is valuable and can encourage you to continue practicing this kind of rational common-sense analysis of your driving knowledge and assumptions that influence your emotions and thoughts in traffic.

About half of the population thinks with a negative or oppositional bias against other drivers. They choose a personally derogatory explanation of another driver's actions when these actions are perceived as threatening.

The majority of motorists entertain hostile thoughts and even violent fantasies against “inconsiderate“ drivers who don’t seem to care when putting others in danger. These violent fantasies are often accompanied by verbal road rage during which drivers yell at one another and throw each other insulting gestures. This is when children are indoctrinated as well when they ride in the car with a parent. The backseat of the car has become road rage nursery, reinforced later when they play aggressive driving games and watch aggressive behaviors in movies and car commercials on TV.

So we are in a public mental health crisis of vast proportions. Giving drivers a clearer understanding of why they have such aggressive emotions can make a difference in regaining courtesy and a peaceful driving style.

Driving psychology shows the relation between your driving style and your overall personality. By working to improve your driver personality you are at the same time also continuing to work on your personal growth and to improve your mental health. Self-knowledge must include all of the negative and all of the positive elements that form our personality. Self-knowledge gives you the power to self-modify.

This book can be helpful to parents who are trying to influence their adolescent children to learn to develop good driving skills and peaceful traffic emotions. The entire Driving Psychology Series can also be of use to driver education teachers who are willing to teach about traffic emotions and how to manage them.
