A New York Times best-selling poetry collection, featuring both Dog Songs and A Thousand Mornings

Mary Oliver’s Dog Songs is a celebration of the special bond between human and dog, as understood through the poet’s relationships to the canines that have accompanied her daily walks, warmed her home, and inspired her work. Oliver’s poems begin in the small everyday moments familiar to all dog lovers, but through her extraordinary vision, these observations become higher meditations on the world and our place in it.

Dog Songs includes visits with old friends, like Oliver’s beloved Percy, and introduces still others in poems of love and laughter, heartbreak and grief. Throughout, the many dogs of Oliver’s life merge as fellow travelers and as guides, uniquely able to open our eyes to the lessons of the moment and the joys of nature and connection.

In A Thousand Mornings, Mary Oliver returns to the imagery that has come to define her life’s work, transporting us to the marshland and coastline of her beloved home, Provincetown, Massachusetts. Whether studying the leaves of a tree or mourning her treasured dog Percy, Oliver is open to the teachings contained in the smallest of moments and explores with startling clarity, humor, and kindness the mysteries of our daily experience.

My daughter had never recommended a book of poetry to me before, and I am very picky about poetry and did not expect to like it. I completely enjoyed this book, and have now listened to all the Mary Oliver Audible has to offer. Largely the author's themes happen to resonate very strongly with me: The sea; dogs; living, and death. A few of the poems in this volume were drafts, awaiting finality, and I really apricated their inclusion and wonder what they may become.

The author's narration is excellent.

Mary Oliver’s work, read in her own voice, is soothing. It is joyful, contemplative, and silly. A treasure to behold.

I found nothing to dislike, can we change the cadence and voice perfectly matched the beauty of her poetry. I could identify with almost all of it.

The silenced voice of a poetic genius

I sincerely wanted to just fall in love with this book but I found it difficult to listen to as the poems are read almost continuously. I hope the produces find a way to place a (greater) space between the poems. Love that it is read by the author and of course, her poetry is magic.

There are no spaces between the poems

Mary Oliver’s passion for all things in nature is clear in her understanding of the many dogs who have graced her life. She expresses her joy in seeing a dog with no leash in the very beginning of Dog Songs. That delight in letting dogs be fully who they are, is evident throughout. So, too, her love shines through.
