Publisher's summary

Balford-le-Nez is a dying seatown on the coast of Essex. But when a member of the town's small but growing Asian community is found dead on its beach, his neck broken, sleepy Balford-le-Nez ignites. Working solo without her longtime partner, Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley, Sergeant Barbara Havers must probe not only the mind of a murderer and a case very close to her own heart, but the terrible price people pay for deceiving others...and themselves.

Critic reviews

"One of George's best.... insightful, tense and compassionate." (Entertainment Weekly)

"Deception on His Mind falls smartly into place in [George's] literate, impassioned series, one of today's best." (Chicago Tribune)

"Typically extravagant: long on ambition, long on characterization...it's tough to resist the pull of George's storytelling once hooked." (USA Today)

always love Elizabeth George

Good mystery and enjoyed learning more of traditional Pakastani culture and the challenges for the next generations.

Engrossing read

I was captivated from page one on.
Unable to put down until early morning and then continued to listen until the end.
I need a nap because of my lack of sleep. A book that will ruin your sleep schedule.

Adventurous Sidetrip

Wasn't sure about an Elizabeth George without Inspector Lynley - but time spent with Barbara Havers entertains and enthralls.

Another good one!

fabulous performance. I love the friendship developing between Barbara Havers and Hadiya & her dad! not sure of proper spelling since I've only heard, not read, her name. LOL!

Fantastic Listen

My first Elizabeth George novel but certainly not my last. Great twists and turns and plot twists. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.

DS Barbara Havers forever!

This was a great novel for one reason. It was a Barbara Havers exclusive.

She is my favorite character in the series. I was hoping she might get the sack and become a PI in her own series.

Too bad.

My favorite since Missing Joseph.

soo what happened tho?

no closure on Salah/Theo/gma/Rachel. very weird loose ends. I like Barbara best tho and would prefer she be the lead to all of these, so it was nice that this book was only about her.

Best so far

Been reading/listening to this series of books by Elizabeth George. I did not like the last book much because was - for my tastes - too much of a minor character. I won't say more as I don't want to give any spoilers. This story focused on Barbara Havers. I enjoyed it and the mystery was a good one.

Barbara Havers is the story

DI Lynley never appears in this story, beyond Barbara's references to working with him, and we get an entire novel starring Barbara, who demonstrates insight, compassion, and courage. The context for the story is the reactions of the white English to the members of the Pakistani community in a seaside town in England, exploring the variety of relationships and the limited understanding. The plot twists until nearly the last page, in a well crafted story.
