Forensic linguist Macy Reid is an expert on kidnapping, having been abducted when she was a child. So, she is the perfect investigator to be called in when a Denver tycoon's 11-year-old daughter is abducted - for the second time. Narrator didn’t do it justice.

This is a story with a strong female main character. She is an accomplished detective with impressive credentials, but the narrator gives her a whiny, weak voice. He also has a terrible habit of going from one scene to another without even a single breath or beat; it causes a sense of disconnection until you figure out you switched scenes. Lastly, the word “dour” is pronounced “daw-ur”; it comes up several times with narrator saying “door”. I know that is petty, but it is an audible-pronunciation counts!

Enjoyable blend of well done mystery and erotica

This entire series mind hunters somewhat formulaic books was executed very well. Though stories had similar elements, each was also different enough to be quite engaging as light reading. Certainly not literature, but entertaining.

WAIT…WHO IS THE MASTERMIND?!

This is my fourth Kylie Brant, (Mastermind Series), and so far, my favorite. The main characters, Macy Reid and Keller Burke are partners on a special law enforcement team that’s been tasked with finding Ellie Maulder (eleven years old), who has been captured for the SECOND time. The person who took her are blackmailing Ellie’s ultra rich parents, but the various law enforcement teams who are attempting to work together and play nice while doing it, have little hope the girl will make it out alive this time. But…they don’t know how smart and determined the little girl is. She gives the guy who is holding her a real run for his money. He’s a killer with a short fuse and he’s just itching to repay her for all the extra trouble she’s caused by flaying her with a hunting knife. He knows if he does that, he won’t get the money the person he works for is supposed to pay him.

Reid and Burke are two specialists tasked with getting Ellie back before the deadline the kidnapper has set.

Reid and Burke are good as a team, but there’s a small problem. They don’t LIKE each; the just rub each the wrong way. (Burke would like to rub Macy a whole lot more)!

Macy is very prim and proper — almost to the point of being “stuck up.” And then there’s Burke…he’s goosey-loosely, has an annoying sense of humor and just LOVES tweaking Macy, just to see if he can a rise of her. Burke actually LIKES Macy, and if Macy was being truthful with herself, she likes Burke too — WAY more then she wants to (especially after they worked a case together six months prior and ended up having some pretty hot sex). It annoys the heck out of her, and because it does, Burke just can’t help himself. Being the smart ass he is, he teases Macy, trying to get her to admit she likes Burke much as he likes her.

There’s this darn pesky little thing standing between them — that problem of a little girl who is being held hostage and whose life hangs in the balance as the payoff deadline looms nearer…

One major complaint about this book? The mastermind, the man behind the curtain pulling the strings on all the puppets involved in the kidnapping and of those involved in getting the girl home to her family is never revealed in THIS book!😡. AAARRRGGGHHHHHH! What is that?! Author humor? NOT FUNNY!

I sure hope the next book in the Series reveals who it is and who wants Adam Reiger, Macy and Keller’s boss dead, dead, DEAD!

As always, Bronson Pinchot as the narrator, was fabulous! He has tremendous talent when it comes to voices and accents. I still remember him from that show, Perfect Strangers, in which he played the crazy, heavily accented cousin from some obscure country who lived with his poor, chronically confused American cousin, Larry. Every time his character stated his name, Barkie Bartoutakamous, I nearly fell on the ground laughing.

I have just one small complaint about Mr. Pinchot’s narration in this book. The word “dour” is used seven or eight times. Mr. Pinchot pronounces the word so the word sounds like “wood.” This is probably a petty thing, but after the third time, it started to bother me.

I enjoyed this book so much I will be listening to it again before I move on to the next book!

It's a great series!

There's no diversity in these books. I enjoy the storyline, but I wish some of the MAIN characters represented more color.

Favorite of the series, so far

This is a romance as much as a mystery/procedural (as is the whole series). As always, a good crime plot. I think this is my favorite so far because I so enjoyed the character Kel. The romance had charm & worked.

Bronson Pinchot was terrific, as always. Loved the way he brought Kel to life. I’m sure he contributed a lot to my enjoyment of that character.

THRILLING

I couldn’t stop listening once I started! When I fell asleep and woke up, I would immediately go back to the last part I remembered!
Good from start to finish!

Enjoyed this book

The narrator was very good except for a peculiar mispronunciation: he pronounces “dour expression” as if it rhymed with your/you’re. Not as is correct, which rhymes with hour. That happens about 8-9 times. Then in last 20 minutes he pronounces “double On
