Publisher's summary

"Leave Luther's body right where we flung him," Bates said. "You aren't burying him today." After Sally Mae Webster phoned me up to tell me that my Korean War buddy Luther Webster had been shot and killed by the Bates brothers, I knew that I wasn't going to stop until I had righted that wrong. I wondered just how many graves I was going to have to dig today.

What people are saying about Steve Vernon:

"If Harlan Ellison, Richard Matheson, and Robert Bloch had a three-way sex romp in a hot tub, and then a team of scientists came in and filtered out the water and mixed the leftover DNA into a test tube, the resulting genetic experiment would most likely grow up into Steve Vernon." (Bookgasm)

Gripping tale

Vernon really grabs your attention with this story. First of all, the story is so short yet so powerful. He doesn't waste any words and gets right down to business. It shows the bond and friendship that these 2 men had.....the lengths he would go to avenge his friends death. It's a gripping tale that will especially relate to those who have military connections & backgrounds. Theo Holland also narrates the story in a way you truly feel the emotions of this vet and the pain he feels for the loss of his war buddy and the wife that was left behind. It was a truly magnificent compilation between the author and narrator and together they deliver a fantastic piece of art. The ending will grab at your heart strings for sure.

How to do a real tribute to a fallen comrade

I listened to this story twice. It really has some special meaning for me. I kept thinking of Billy the Kid in Young Guns going on about the meaning of Pals. Sometimes, there are things that we do for our friends that we wouldn't do for family. My father is a vet, and I could easily see him doing this for one of his own. Thus, the story had some real significance for me.

It doesn't hurt that Vernon is a versitile writer who can do mermaids, gunslingers, and horror as easily as most people write an email. He is always engaging, and his stories carry a real emotional weight. I really respect his skills and talent.

Holland narrates, and it feels like he is telling a story about what happened in his life. You will think that he is that grizzled vet and that this is just a page from his life spilling out over a beer. He does some fantastic work. Even though I did receive a promo code for this review it in no way influenced my considerations of the material, and in fact, inspired me to be more honest. In fact, getting a code generally makes me harsher as a reviewer as I am more often concerned what someone like Me will decide based on my review.

Powerful short story

A powerful short story that grabs you from the first line. In the tradition of old western storytelling, but in a modern setting.

The story speaks for itself, but as always, Theo Holland does an excellent job narrating.

Repaying an old debt.

This was a short, but well-written & well-performed audiobook regarding the nature of repaying an old debt.

Mr. Vernon did not waste words, & Theo Holland brought those words to life.

Highly recommended.

Entertaining Violent Short Story

What can one write about a 23 minute audio book? Well the story is tight, sharp, fun and satisfying. A veteran takes revenge against the bad guys, in a humorous manner. Adding to the plus of this narrative is the work of Theo Holland as the narrator. He "gets" the characters, the humor, the drama, whatever the author puts on the page, Mr. Holland draws out magnificently. Another winner story, made better, by the adept talent of Theo Holland.

Riveting Short Story

Another awesome story by Steve Vernon...The gist of this story is loyalty and honoring friendships...Our hero of the story exacts brutal revenge on the Bates Gang after they shot and killed his best friend and Korean war buddy.Luther Webster, there is a lot of action packed in this 23 minute audiobook...The narrator is Theo Holland who did a great job as usual...I received this audiobook for free from the author and AU and this is my voluntary unbiased review.
