Acerca de esta escucha

Acclaimed author Joe Lansdale's landmark and mythic tale of love and vengeance at the dark dawn of the East Texas oil boom.

Jack Parker knows all too well how treacherous turn-of-the-century East Texas can be. His parents did not survive a smallpox epidemic. His grandfather was murdered. Now his sister Lula has been kidnapped by a criminal who may believe wearing a dead man's clothes protects them both from death.

With bounty hunter Shorty, a charismatic and cunning dwarf, and Eustace, a gravedigging son of an ex-slave, the heartbroken young Jack sets off on an epic quest to rescue his sister from the corrupt men who control much of the new territory.

In the throes of being civilized, East Texas is still a wild, feral place. Oil wells spurt liquid money from the ground. But blood and redemption rule supreme.

A solid yes finding this book that both my husband and I could enjoy together! Perhaps a bit unrealistic at times and without giving anything away quite a rollercoaster ride of events. We really enjoyed the narrator as well as the writing style. A new author for me.

A definite wow!

I've been a huge fan of Mr. Lansdale's Hap and Leonard series, but this one fell a little short of my expectations. I found it to be a fairly cliche western. Not a bad western by any stretch, but there isn't anything about it that stands out either I'm afraid.

Typical Western

A riveting turn-of-the-century western full of great characters a compelling story and the beauty, darkness and humor that are Lansdale's trademarks. The man's a terrific writer.

Will Collyer's performance is perfect. Highly recommended!

One of Lansdale's Best

The very rare novel where a main character is a hog. (literally)
In my Lansdale Top 3 w 'Deadman's Road' and 'The Bottoms'.

East Texas frontier justice

Performance was one of the best I've heard. Super engaging story. Joe R Lansdale is always great. Perfect length, not too long not too short.

The narration was fabulous.! My first Joe Lansdale book and I think I'll start the Hap and Leonard series.

The story was excellent, Mr. Lansdale’s stories are always entertaining, and Mr. Collier did a terrific job narrating the different characters’ voices. Sometimes female voices can be tricky for male narrators, but he did a fine job.

I do have a couple reflections on the book in general.

While I understand that good authors write period pieces as authentically as possible, sometimes I suspect that some writers use authenticity as justification (more likely an excuse) to over-use the “N-word”. By the 15th time I’m usually grinding my jaw in frustration and discomfort. That’s not to say that I am unable to suspend my disbelief, but often the over-use pulls me out of the story.
Also, there really should be a warning concerning the multiple references to “rape”. I’m not trying to be “woke”, this is a real issue for many people.

“Other than that, how did you enjoy the play, Mrs. Lincoln?” 😏🤭

Good book, but needs warning or advisory

Sooo well written and spoken. We can’t wait until the movie comes out. Saving audible for another listening, or perhaps more. Recommending book and movie to anyone who’ll listen. Our new favorite writer. Thanks!

Surprised with deliciousness!

I'm sad to say I've never read a Lansdale book until now, and I'm hooked! his characters are so real, and their voices are perfect! the performance of the narrator was great for all the broad diversity in this cast, and I was never confused or lost at who was speaking. this was amazing!

now, it's also very graphic, both in content and language. it's a period piece, and it pulls no punches. many people who are squeamish with gore and social controversy may not appreciate the story. but if you want something true to both the period, and the characters, this is an amazing story.

my first Lansdale book and I'm hooked!
