About this listen

Beneath the water the body sank rapidly. She would lie still and undisturbed for many years, but above her on dry land, the nightmare was just beginning.

When Detective Erika Foster receives a tip-off that key evidence for a major narcotics case was stashed in a disused quarry on the outskirts of London, she orders for it to be searched. From the thick sludge the drugs are recovered, but so is the skeleton of a young child. The remains are quickly identified as seven-year-old Jessica Collins. The missing girl who made headline news 26 years ago.

As Erika tries to piece together new evidence with the old, she must dig deeper and find out more about the fractured Collins family and the original detective, Amanda Baker - a woman plagued by her failure to find Jessica. Erika soon realizes this is going to be one of the most complex and demanding cases she has ever taken on.

Is the suspect someone close to home? Someone is keeping secrets. Someone who doesn't want this case solved. And they'll do anything to stop Erika from finding the truth.

Would you listen to Dark Water again? Why?

Yes, I would. I love the mystery and suspense that seems to follow Erica wherever she goes.

What other book might you compare Dark Water to and why?

The other two books in this series, of course. Same author and narrator and as I said above, Erica is like a murder magnet. Serial killers seem to flock to whatever department she's working in, invisibly begging her to try and catch them.

What does Jan Cramer bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She truly brings the characters to life. I love the gritty no-nonsense way Foster and the other key characters are both written, and vocalized.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

There's an extra body at my crime scene... must be Thursday!

Any additional comments?

I am really enjoying each new installment of this series, and sincerely hope the author continues to cause trouble for DCI Foster for years to come. Bryndza has a knack for weaving together intricate plot and story lines and keeping the reader on their toes from the first page to the last. If you enjoy murder mysteries, serious suspense and strong female leads, then you'll love this series.

What made the experience of listening to Dark Water the most enjoyable?

I enjoyed the character development and the narration as well as the crime mystery.

What did you like best about this story?

It's a crime story but not anything that made my stomach turn. No horror here!

Have you listened to any of Jan Cramer’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I love listening to Jan Cramer. Her accents are really good especially when she is jumping from one character to the next. You can really distinguish who is who.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No extreme reaction. I just enjoyed it right through to the end. I actually didn't want it to end and it made my driving commute back and forth to work really tolerant. I almost wished for traffic!

Any additional comments?

I am looking forward to reading the next Erika Foster book!

Another Erika Foster Gem!

We are back with Erika Foster and friends and Bryndza does not disappoint. The main story line is strong and entertaining. The narcotics bust and subsequent story line felt unnecessary though I understand we had to get to the quarry somehow. Ms. Cramer does a fine job BUT I sometimes disagree with her interpretation of the character's mood/emotion which can be frustrating for me. In the end - a great listen and I will be purchasing Foster 4 and beginning the experience today.

It's Great!

Great story with surprise Twists

Robert Brynzda has made a memorable character with Erika Foster - along the lines of Kay Scarpetta. The stories get better each time, and the end is always on the edge.
