About this listen

First Lieutenant Robert Davidson. The son of an American military legend and a war hero who died in combat during the Afghanistan conflict.

Or did he?

The answer could bring down a secret military empire - as well as a guy named Max Bowman.

Max is a rude, crude and rapidly aging ex-CIA desk jockey who gets the job of tracking down the truth about Davidson - but his chances of actually discovering it are about half of that of finding a horse wearing a kimono. What Max doesn't know is that nobody wants the facts - and nobody expects Max to find them.

But Max has to pay the rent. So he takes on the job, which takes him on a road trip into the heart of America's darkness as well as his own, where he has to deal with exploding homes, brutal murders, a sexy heiress, a misguided teenager and Max's girlfriend back home, who's cursing him out on a regular basis.

And, oh yeah, a para-military organization that's just waiting for the right moment to kill him.

It all happens in Dark Sky, a sardonic and suspenseful mystery-thriller in which an underwhelming hero must confront an overwhelming conspiracy - not to mention himself.

This is the first book in the Max Bowman series.

Funny and entertaining!

Where does Dark Sky rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I'd have to rank it in my top 10 of the funniest audiobooks I've listened to

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

The plot itself did not, but the antics and crude attitude of Max Bowman did.

What does George Kuch bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He did a great job of getting Max Bowman's personality to shine.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It definitely made me laugh quite a lot.

A good book but...................

I had a difficult time getting through this book, because of all the swear words. I feel this book would have been much better with about 2000 swear words removed

Dark Sky: The Misadventures of Max Bowman, Book 1

What did you love best about Dark Sky?

The off beat journey, sardonic main character. Great performance by George Kuch.

What did you like best about this story?

A very different formula than most mysteries or adventure stories.

Which scene was your favorite?

The inevitable confrontation with the powers hindering Max from trying to complete his search.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I listened to large sections in two or so sit down listenings

Any additional comments?

This was creative plotting, and interesting characterization. The voice performance was diverse and entertaining.

FAIR WARNING, THERE IS A LOT OF SALTY LANGUAGE. IF THAT BOTHERS YOU, YOU MIGHT WANT TO PASS.

Thanks for the opportunity to listen.

Exciting and Witty

A good thriller with great characters and lots of great humor, punched home by a great narrator.

Good story and narration

Max and his girlfriend aren't particularly compelling characters, but I like the fact that Max doesn't even carry a gun. His "services" are intellectual rather than physical, although he seems to drink too much to be effective intellectually. The story is suspenseful, fairly realistic and is complete with no cliffhanger ending.

George Kuch delivers a very satisfactory performance, although there were a couple of instances where I wished for a bit more distinction between character voices. He does capture the voice of Max Bowman well.

This is the first book of a series, so perhaps Max and the other main characters will become more compelling as the series develops.

An intriguing story line right from the start. Conspiracy theories and mystery abound!

Very likable main characters! Easy to listen to narration, keeps your attention the whole time.

I enjoyed this book very much and I will most likely be getting more books in the series in the future.

Great story!

I listened to this book during a long road trip. It was suspenseful AND funny, an unusual combination. I plan to listen to all the books in this series.

What a wild and crazy ride!!!

Any additional comments?

There is absolutely nothing not to like about this listen. Everything is "on point." The writing was excellent. The hero was seriously flawed and therefore extremely likeable. The side characters carried their weight. The narration was bone-chillingly good with just the right amount of smirk. And the ending was a great big WTF! Such a wild and crazy ride. I loved the listen and can't wait for the second book in the series!

Hard boiled goodness

While this isn't a book is usually pick up I was intrigued by book two. I must read all books in a series in order. Can't help myself. The reviews on this one were excellent. I really enjoyed it too. I do like stepping out of my usual zombie, prepper, teen science fiction or chic lit box that I go to on a regular basis.
I'd gotten book 2 free from the author through audiobookboom.com. The author was so kind to offer me this copy for free when I told him I like to read them in order. How sweet was that!!!???
Anyway....
Max & PMA make a great team & I hope they are together in the next book. Unless PMA does as he's told and gets his butt in school. I love that Max (while ex CIA) is really just a regular guy. He uses his brain more than brawn & has an aversion to guns. I'd recommend this to men and boys. It has language but nothing else to offend. If a woman only reads romance &/or chic lit she may not enjoy it as much as I did.
If listening to this you may find that playing the speech at 1.25 makes the book a lot more enjoyable.

A new twist to Action and Adventure

Max Bowman isn’t your stereotypical detective. He is pushing 60, doesn’t carry a gun, and he isn’t even really a fighter. With all that being said he is really a lovable character and does the right thing.

I had mixed feelings at first as I began this story but the further I got in the more I was hooked. I like that max isn’t like all the other characters out there. It makes him feel more human.

I will definitely read the others in this series.

Give it a read!!!
