The author created the gloomy foreboding mood for this early 20th century ghost story with quite a deft touch, pulling me along page after page (if that is term when you listen to an Audiobook). Even though I suspected what might come next, i was compelled to follow along as our heroine found her way. That's good storytelling.

I've not yet seen the movie, and cant speak to how it aligns with the book; however, from the few clips Ive seen - i am thinking (and hoping) quite well.

I recommend this book, unreservedly.

Entertaining Gothic Ghost Story.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes because I find that sometimes it is good to know what is going on in the character's minds that the movie cannot capture.

What other book might you compare Crimson Peak to and why?

It is hard to say. Just about anything from the Gothic era of writing in England (UK) or America. Poe, Shelley, Sheridan Le Fenu, Mary Shelley, Walpole, Perrault (version of Bluebeard), possibly Lovecraft, Stevenson. Matheson, Wilde, etc. It is a gothic romance but it has elements of different types of stories that are dark, mysterious and suspense. If I absolutely had to name one, it would probably be The Fall of the House of Usher, or a couple of later interpretations.

What about Imogen Church’s performance did you like?

I thought she did an outstanding job at the different characters both male and female, and other. She flips from the English accent to the American as if it is so easy to do, which it is not. She has a strong and yet soft voice that really does make the story come alive. I have heard other audios she has done and she is remarkable.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I am not sure. It has it's few moments dry humor in that I just about instantly really liked Edith because she is a very strong willed and minded woman. Also, I love mysteries that include some background. I found it to be very enjoyable.

Any additional comments?

I debated about getting the book because I do want to see the movie and was afraid either I would not like the story or it would ruin it. However, that is not the case, I want to see it even more now. I think with a lot of movies, especially if it is from a book, which this is not, one of the things that directors/producers try to do is illustrate the emotion or thinking process of the characters because in this type of story it would be something that may need more explanation and the actors do the best they can to show it. This cleared a few things up so when I do see the movie, I think I will have a better understanding of the thinking involved. It is hard to describe without giving the story away.

Really want to see the movie

I thought the book would give me a better understanding of the Sharps and how they became what they are or were. Overall, the story was good. Just like the movie with a little more insight.

Same as the movie

I loved every second of this book. it's perfect in every way. Imogene Church executed the story perfectly and the author used the best descriptive words I've EVER heard/read. You can see all everything the character sees, you can feel, smell and hear every little thing the character sees feels or smells because of the beautiful writing.

this book has become one of my ABSOLUTE favorites.

I seriously loved every second of this book.

this book is amazing.

Since seeing the movie, I wanted to read the book. Finding out it was available through audible was even better. This story just keeps you enthralled through every chapter. This is a world that you feel part of, and you won’t be able to stop. Highly recommend.

Chilling, unsettling, shocking…

Love, greed, loss, money, murder, creepy, intense, forbidden love, maddening, ghosts, mystery, scandals, revenge, power, blood, betrayal, deceit, family & a sacrifice for love.....all while IT WATCHED from the shadows!!

All things needed to make for a wonderful ghost story and a narrative that grips you! It brings you right into Crimson Peak & in front of the spirits that are waiting to tell you their story.

The only bad thing is that from time to time the story dragged on explaining things or fights WAY to long.

I highly recommend this book & absolutely recommend Imogen Church! Her voice is perfect & I love how she changes everything when she starts with, "It Watched..."

The Perfect Ghost Story
