Publisher's summary

Press play on this funny, sexy short story about rival true-crime podcast hosts forced to play nice and work together when, in reality, all they want to do is kill each other.

Emery Thompson hates Calvin Chamberlain. From the way he acts like he’s better than everyone to the way he moves through the world thinking his podcast is the cream of the crop, every little thing about the man gets to him. Even that dashing, oh-so-confident smile. He’d rather be caught dead than be around the man any longer than necessary—or admit that last part out loud.

Calvin Chamberlain hates admitting defeat. It’s hard enough losing sponsors for his historical crime podcast while obnoxious pop-culture ones like Emery’s only gain more, so it’s a particularly cruel twist of fate when a late fan’s request for a collaboration with Emery lands in his lap. He’s in no position to turn down the plea, and with no way out, Calvin reluctantly agrees.

But keeping things purely professional turns out to be a challenge when these two make it to the studio. Their chemistry crackles through their microphones, and soon, their numbers begin to skyrocket. Can these two make a killing off what they once thought was a death sentence—and more importantly, will Calvin and Emery give into the heat of passion?

About the Creator

Jack Harbon is an award-winning author obsessed with storytelling in all forms. If he’s not working on one of his (many, many) manuscripts, he’s most likely somewhere crocheting, watching French horror movies, searching for dolls to add to his collection, or causing chaos and mayhem in The Sims.

About the Performer

Lauded for his boyish voice, emotional range and fluid vocalizations, Kevin R. Free is one of the narrators of the 2011 Audie Award-winning Here in Harlem and an Audie Award Finalist for his narration of The Red Pyramid (with Katherine Kellgren). Kevin was named a Golden Voice in 2012 by AudioFile Magazine and is a recipient of 10 Earphones Awards, including one for his narration of the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Known World. A narrator of over 300 audiobooks since 2001, he is especially proud of his narration of several series including Martha Wells’s Murderbot Diaries, Walter Dean Myers’s The Cruisers, and Jay Bell’s Something Like.

About the Performer

Ron Butler is a highly lauded narrator, with over a dozen Audiofile Earphone Awards, and seven Audie Award nominations, (most recently for King and The Dragonflies by Kacen Callender, and The Lesson by Cadwell Turnbull). His titles consistently make annual "Best Of" lists every year, and his work spans multiple genres. As an actor, he has over a hundred film, theater, and television credits, (most notably as a regular on True Jackson VP), and an IFP Award winner for his work in the HBO film Everyday People. He has written, directed and produced social media content garnering millions of views, and spends his time between Los Angeles and Palm Springs, CA.

WHY ISN’T IT LONGER!!!

I need MORE! This is one of the best stories I have listened to EVER! The character development was on point and the chemistry between Calvin and Emery was beautiful. I need more of them and from this author. I am only mad because I don’t have more of these two together.

Heartwarming romance plus podcasts

This is a short story in length, but it lacks nothing in content. It meets all the requirements of rivals-to-lovers while telling an interesting story in the podcast industry and tantalizing parts of the actual fictional podcast episodes.
The full cast is very good. I especially enjoyed the high technical quality, which did justice to the subject matter.

Great story

I'm a big fan of how this made me more interested in podcasts. I just need to find one like "A History of Violence"

Super fun!

Crimes of Passion by Jack Harbon is a Black M/M romance between rival true crime podcasters. Calvin and Emery have very different approaches to what they do, but they need to find a way to work together on a project. Their attraction and reluctant mutual respect makes their collaboration easier than either of them expected, and it is a blast to listen to! This is narrated by a talented full cast and it has all of the production touches of a podcast. It had me laughing out loud at the humor and sass, but it also respects some heavier topics through the passions of our main characters, such as racism in the US justice system.

If you want a quick and satisfying listen, check this one out! This was my first Jack Harbon title and I will definitely be reading more from this author.

Content notes: some crimes are discussed (on the podcast, which is like a story within a story) in a way I would not consider graphic, but these include cannibalism, a car crash, and violence toward a pregnant woman.

Actual podcast like this?

Ok, this novella was fantastic, but my question is are there any podcast actually like this? Especially ones in Emery's style.

Fun and thoughtful

I’ve never read a story with gay black male characters and I am delighted that Audible has offered it’s customers an opportunity to bring this story, author and narrator to our attention. Looking forward to more options like these as a short or longer book. Two thumbs up!!!!

Amazing

This was an amazing take on the challenges Black LGBTQIA+ people face in their professional careers, especially in non black spaces. The story was well written, the voice actors are superb, and the banter between characters really pulled me in.

Would love to hear more like this from this author and others!

I loved this short story! I loved the performance of it! The banter between these two characters and the way that it was acted out by these two voice actors was everything!! I loved everything about this!!

Literally the best romcom I’ve ever read

WHY MUST WE BE TEMPTED WITH A NOVELLA!! My only complaint is that it wasn’t 11 hours longer hahaha. I loved the characters, the conflict was actually believable and not petty, and the chemistry??? Oh the author knocked it out of the park with dialogue!!
