Story
Alan Gregory is a clinical psychologist with a thriving practice in Boulder, Colorado. His life begins to unravel when one of his female patients is found in an apparent suicide and the local paper begins printing accusations from an unnamed source of sexual impropriety between the woman and Dr. Gregory. He launches a psychological and personal quest for the truth that rapidly intensifies when more of his patients die untimely deaths, and Gregory suspects not only that the deaths are related but that another one of his patients may be somehow involved. Lacking facts but roused by suspicion and troubled by seemingly random acts of terror around him, Gregory starts to fear for the safety of the people he loves. The question of the inviolability of confidential disclosures made to Gregory by his patients - privileged information - becomes crucial as the psychologist pursues an unsettling romance with Lauren Crowder, a lovely deputy district attorney investigating one of the deaths. Bound to silence, Gregory follows the psychological tracks of someone he fears may be a cunning and disturbed killer, while turning to his enigmatic but supportive partner, Diane Estevez, for counsel, and to his tart-tongued female urologist neighbor for support. The sinister, surprising drama unfolds against Boulder's Rocky Mountain backdrop, in the arresting natural beauty of Aspen, and in the midst of a baroque Halloween costume party in downtown Boulder. Finally, in a lonely mountain lodge enshrouded in menace, the story comes to its breathtaking climax.

Story
My life was ordinary until three years ago when I was thrown out of a downtown hotel window. My name is Robbie Brownlaw, and I am a homicide detective for the city of San Diego. I am 29 years old. I now have synesthesia, a neurological condition where your senses get mixed up. Sometimes when people talk to me, I see their voices as colored shapes provoked by the emotions of the speakers, not by the words themselves. I have what amounts to a primitive lie detector.

It looked for all the world like a terrible, tragic accident. Susanna Morgan had gotten up in the middle of the night, tripped, fallen, and broken her neck. Yet when detective Justin Westwood inspects the victim's apartment, he can't help noticing that the details don't quite add up. The glass on the bedside table is knocked over but there are no cuts on her body. The scrape on her knee looks suspiciously fresh. A good one but not the best
To be honest...Scott Pratt is a victim of his own success...
This book was his most "typical" book and even a stretch of a storyline.
Whereas I was blown away by his other books, this one, while good was not memorable.
For most authors a 4star solidly written book would be a win... For Mr Pratt, I'm left a little let down because his other books are so good.
The reasons are a) the storyline was much more typical legal drama with only a little twist at the end. I actually expected a much bigger twist then we got... I won't elaberate due to spoiler.
It was a good book but not memorable like his previous ones. Although some subplots were included they didn't intertwine into the Storey like they normally do. There was much less personal drama with the main character.
Mr Pratt has done such a great job of making the story about Joe Dillard and the case is merely an extension of him, that a story sticky about a case with no progress in Joe Dullards story left me feeling let down about the book.
I'm looking forward to the next one, hoping Scott Pratt gets back in the swing of things.

I thoughts this was a very good book . The author told the story ,filling in with past enough to keep you remembering, or up to present time. Thank-you.

This was a pretty good one!
I’ve listened to all of this series in order, and I really like these books. I’ve been disappointed at how few legal details and court scenes there have been in the last couple, and how much more investigation the last few books were about. But in this case, it was very interesting. Great narrator. These books are much better for keeping the same narration through out all the series. Recommended highly!
