Book eight in the Gabriel Hawke novels

An abandoned vehicle.

A missing man.

Oregon State Trooper Gabriel Hawke discovers an abandoned vehicle at a trailhead while checking hunters. The owner of the vehicle never arrived at his destination.

As Hawke follows the leads, he learns that the man was in the process of selling his farm over the objections of his wife, who said he could only sell it over her dead body.

Continuing to dig for clues, Hawke turns up two bodies buried on the farm. Who killed the two, and why? The questions keep Hawke circling for answers...and backing the killer into a corner.

Have you ever seen those intricately knitted landscape sweaters with a multiplicity of colors? Can you then imagine what a truly messy tangle the yarns would get into? That's how this story is. Hawke tries to follow each color (suspect and rationale) but gets tangled and has to try the next one. Too many of them are all too likely but there is far too little solid evidence. It might seem as if he is bumbling, but he has just never encountered this kind of sociopath before. The conclusion had me totally baffled! Terrific read and a fantastic series!
Larry Gorman is great as narrator with his laid-back interpretation that only seems to emphasize points being made by the author.

Good read!
