About this listen

Humanity excels in finding ever creative ways to murder....

Car bombings as a means for murder was unheard of, unprecedented, and as far as Henri Davenforth knows, only one person in the entire world had ever seen the like before: his partner, the Shinigami Detective.

The case is transferred to them, because this one calls for Jamie’s skills. But it turns out that not everything is as it appears on the surface. What should have been a straightforward murder, might have some very murky motives behind it, and the further that the two investigate, the stranger the case becomes.

Now the Royal Mage of Kingston is involved, as well as the Kingsmen, bad charms are flying about, and the situation’s going from bad to worse. Their two murder victims created some bad magic, and it’s spreading like a disease throughout the city, killing other people in its wake. Henri’s desperate to track it down, to end it. He’s afraid that if they don’t react fast enough, even more death and explosions will follow in short order.

And thousands will die in the aftermath.

Voices

Having read the book several times, I knew I had no problems with the story, 5stars there. My only problem is with the voices. Jamie sounds like she is in her teens. Seaton sounds like an imbecile. Clint is almost impossible to understand. I hope this is not carried over in futute recordings.

very entertaining

I really like the authors storytelling style. The dual narrators really bring the books to life. Currently there's only three books out on audiobook format. I hope that publishing company sees these reviews and gets the other books in the series made available on audiobook soon. 🤞🏼😊🤞🏼

Both narrators are wonderful.

This is a very well developed story with strong characters, well thought out world and a wonderful unique story. Wish the entire series was in audible instead of just two of the books. (Audible only carries one of the audible books available.)

Having two wonderful narrators is the icing on the cake. I wish more of the audible books had two narrators - a male narrator for the male parts and a female narrator for the female characters.

Slight step back

Great story, though a small step back from the previous book. Definitely still enjoyable and worth listening to. The narrators did a fantastic job once again

Great story!

I first heard of Honor Raconteur when Amazon featured her in Kindle. I really enjoyed 'Magic and the Shinigami Detective' and have since read all the books in this series. I'm glad that Audible is starting to record her books, but would prefer narrators with older voices. Jamie is an experienced FBI agent that has withstood horrible torture, PTSD, etc- but the narrator sounds like she's 20 and hasn't had a care in her very short life. The male voice would be good with Seaton's theatrical presence, but Henri is a 30-plus year old man that is often overworked and magically depleted- and this fellow sounds care and stress free. Otherwise, I'm happy that a wonderful author is getting recognition for her work and hope she continues the story further. Thanks, Honor!

Great little series, great narrators

I read this series first on Kindle, then wanted to get the audiobooks. Unfortunately this is the only book of the series I found available. I already liked the stories and both narrators they chose for this are excellent. They make an already good book better with their interpretations of the male and female lead,s and their characterizations of the other voices were also spot on. I hope they make the rest of the series into audiobooks.

Loyalty. intelligence, and wonderful magic!

No one character takes over the story line. Three unusual friends work through the problems and mysteries; each relying on the strength the others possess while applying their own unique skill to unravel this mystery.
