About this listen
Accustomed as we are to accepting as accurate the judgements of ancient Roman history handed down to us by primary sources like Suetonius and Tacitus, it may come as a surprise that some scholars consider these ancient historians to be misleading and biased. According to Italian historian Guglielmo Ferrero, who pointedly took exception to the narrative provided by ancient historians, the narrative we have taken to be indisputable may be entirely false. Instead, Ferrero reveals to us the tumult of revolutionary times that were destroying the traditions of Roman society and its fabric in the period following the death of Sulla. He takes us into the turmoil of Roman leadership as revealed to us by the actual, indisputable events that were chiseled in stone…not the speculation of people living long afterward. For Ferrero, it is at this crucial juncture that the hidden history of the rupture of politics and cultural traditions begins to emerge. And these tremendous tides of human emotion and cultural distress have little to do with the fanciful theories of court historians who were writing generations after the events in question, and who were eager not to offend the current elite in power.
Guglielmo Ferrero (1871 – 1942) was an Italian historian, journalist and novelist, and author of “The Greatness and Decline of Rome” (5 volumes, 1907–1909). Ferrero devoted his writings to classical liberalism and was opposed to any kind of dictatorship and unlimited government. Ferrero was invited to the White House in 1908 by Theodore Roosevelt, who had read “The Greatness and Decline of Rome.” He gave lectures in the USA which were collected and published in 1909 as “Characters and Events of Roman History.”

Story
Mention the name of Friedrich Nietzsche almost anywhere and you are apt to receive a strong emotional response, either negatively or positively. Few persons will say they have no opinion. And for good reason. Employing some of the most withering attacks and scathing criticism conceivable against, among other things, Christianity, education, government, Wagner, and the judicial systems of his day, Nietzsche was a one-man wrecking ball of European society in the latter half of the 19th century.

Story
'The two foes of human happiness are pain and boredom.' Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860) was one of the most influential philosophers of the 19th century because his humanistic, atheistic, if pessimistic views chimed with a new secularism that was emerging from a Western society dominated by religion. Despite his rather forbidding image (and a few outdated views), he is one of the most approachable German philosophers, and this is certainly evident in these two key works, The Wisdom of Life and Counsels and Maxims.

Thomas Paine's The Age of Reason; Being an Investigation of True and Fabulous Theology, published in three parts from 1794, was a best seller in America, where it caused a short-lived deistic revival. Promoting a creator-God while advocating reason in the place of revelation, Paine’s controversial pamphlet caused his native British audience, fearing the results of the French Revolution, to receive it with more hostility than their American counterparts.

Having coined the phrase "the war that will end war," H. G. Wells was disillusioned by the World War I peace settlement. Convinced that humanity needed to awaken to the instability of the world order and remember lessons from the past, the author of science-fiction classics set out to write about history. Wells hoped to remind mankind of its common past, provide it with a basis for international patriotism, and guide it to renounce war.
