Catch Her in a Lie

This is one of those situations where I came across a later installment first and really wanted to read it. So, of course, I went back and started the series from the beginning. I’m weird that way; I blame it on the day job. Anyway, at 44pgs, this is a quick read (about an hour) and the book summary pretty much says it all.

What the book summary doesn’t mention is that Van has visions, bad visions, visions of real-life monsters. The ending has a twist that is a shocker. Ok, I’m interested. Yes, I will be continuing the series.

An Excellent Short Story

4.5 out of 5 stars

There is something about a short story that I just love. Especially when that short story is part of a bigger series. And even more when that series is part of Kindle Unlimited and/or Audible plus. When I saw that Jess Lourey had written a book in this series, I knew I would have to take the dive. Even just looking at the cover drew me in. But once I started it, being a short story – there was no time to hide. Lourey had to start the book fast and definitely did.

I’ve read three books from Lourey, and even in this short story, I couldn’t predict where it would go. She has this way of writing where it feels like anyone could have done it. And every time there is a “reveal,” it just feels like it’s a trick or something else. Catch Her In A Lie was no different. Sure, there were fewer people to suspect, but even when things were being revealed, I was like, “but, is it this person, really?”

Now, I did open this by saying that I love short stories since there’s no place to hide the bad form or a bad premise. But, I will add that I would have loved to read a full-length Catch Her In A Lie, but it would have been a very difficult book to get through (similar to the other Lourey stories). She can write about despicable human beings and despicable things happening to innocent people so it’s almost visceral when reading it.

Overall, a great short story that is easily finished in one sitting. Carly Robbins performed this perfectly and was a great cast for both women in the story.

I liked this one!

This book was pretty good. The characters were likable and the story kept me drawn in. I did find myself wanting more tho and I would love to see a series with the detectives from this book. Overall 4.5 out of 5 stars!

Great listen

This was a good listen for a murder mystery and the ending was what I was expecting for the way it was headed

Get past the narrator and its a good quick story

I really enjoyed the story and the way it was told, that being said I did not like the narrator. The voice was all wrong and if it was a longer story, I would have stopped listening. Her voice is just harsh and did not resonate well with the story being told.
If you can get past the narrator though, it is worth a listen.

Great Start to a New Series

A fast paced introduction to a new series. After reading The Quarry Girls, I had high expectations and was not disappointed, not even a little bit. I’m looking forward to getting to know Van Reed better. Ms Lourey is a fantastic storyteller. Bring on book 1!

Lots of mystery in a small package.

A twisty plot and interesting characters make for a great quick listen! There’s a whole bunch of story in this little package. I enjoyed this audiobook and am looking forward to the next in the series.

Good Story

Catch Her in a Lie by Jess Lourey
43 pages Kindle story starts on 3
1h 23m narrated by Carly Robins
Getaway Collection #5

Genre: Short Stories, Suspense

Featuring: Costa Rica, BCA Cold Case agents (Minnesota) Neurodiversity, Assault on Children - off camera

Rating as a movie: R

My rating:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

My thoughts: I wasn't a fan of the topic but this was well written. I would like to read more from Jess Lourey but I fear she may be too dark for me. Reminded me of Karin Slaughter and Lisa Unger without the graphic details.

Recommend to others?: Maybe. It was a good story I was left wanting a novel on the agents.

A Good Short Story (3 stars)

I listened to this short story Amazon Original audiobook on Audible. I enjoyed that there weren’t too many characters and it’s a fast, easy read. It was a little underwhelming, but a fine for a quick story about a serial killer. I do enjoy books by Jess Lourey. Give it a go of you need a quick read.
