About this listen

Dick Francis was a jockey and horse trainer for many years. His experience gives his equestrian mysteries an authenticity that has attracted fans around the globe. To honor him, the Mystery Writers of America named Dick Francis a Grand Master for his impeccably crafted contributions to the genre.

Jockey Kit Fielding has been riding the de Brescou’s horses in a succession of triumphs on the race course. But this winning streak is about to end. Kit’s twin sister, Holly, has come to him in desperation. Threatened by financial scandal, she and her husband may lose their training stables. Kit soon finds, though, that a greater danger lurks behind the threat—one that could be fatal.

Really very good!

I was so pleasantly surprised by this book. When I bought it, I didn't have high expectations, but I quickly realized, that I'd found a gem!

The story is great. I suspected the culprit once or twice, but the ending came as a big surprise. But, it wasn't the ending so much, as following our hero's journey as he came to his conclusions that was the best part of this story. His thoughts and deductions were logical and methodical.. It was great fun to tag along with him.

The narrator was excellent. I never had to rewind.. to go over a part again. His timbre and diction were easy to follow and made the book that much more enjoyable.

Yes, I'd recommend this to anyone that enjoys a great mystery and following along with the deductions.

Great Racing Story

I love Dick Francis' books I learn so much about racing from him. Also I'm glad I'm not one of the hero's in his books. They are always getting beat up. He is a clever storyteller and I have enjoyed every book I have read. This one no exception.

Good, but slowed in the middle

Simon Preble is always an excellent narrator. I enjoyed reading Dick Francis' books years ago, and this one still held up although it did drag a bit in the middle for me.

Francis is magical

I just love the characters that Dick Francis creates. I love how tender they are and how fierce. The stories are crafted with logic and almost seem to carry themselves through.

enjoyable read

I love horses and mysteries, but the two don't always mix well. Dick Francis does it right. The main character loves horses, and expounds on the personalities of the different animals in a sympathetic way. The mystery develops and resolves slowly - no real AHA moment, but a very satisfactory resolution. I love Simon Prebble's reading - good intonation, understandable, and he doesn't overdo the differences in the voices.

I'm a New Fan of Dick Francis

If you could sum up Break In in three words, what would they be?

Not in three words... but to be complete the book can be summed up thusly: English Steeple Chases, Jockies, Family Feuds, Mystery, Intrigue, and Romance... perfect!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Kit Fielding was my favorite character. He was intelligent, courageous, wise in the ways of human frailty, forgiving, kind, generous, and no one's fool... A great hero I'd say!

Which character – as performed by Simon Prebble – was your favorite?

Again Kit Fielding, though Simon Prebble did a great job with all the characters, male and female alike.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

There was a kidnap scene at the track that got the adrenaline going.

Any additional comments?

I want to listen to the whole series now and take a look at some of Dick Francis' other novels/series. I'm now a fan. :)

I read everything Frances’ write! I love Felix Frances too but he has not accomplished his Father’s skill! Dick Frances grabs you on the first few pages & holds your interest until the end!

Very enjoyable.

Great mystery. Very good characters. Loved all the horse moments. Excellent perspective of the horse. A little long and repetitive at times, but not too much.
