Publisher's summary

In this perennial best seller, embraced by organizations and industries worldwide, globally preeminent management thinkers W. Chan Kim and Renee Mauborgne challenge everything you thought you knew about the requirements for strategic success. Recognized as one of the most iconic and impactful strategy books ever written, Blue Ocean Strategy, now updated with fresh content from the authors, argues that cutthroat competition results in nothing but a bloody red ocean of rivals fighting over a shrinking profit pool. Based on a study of 150 strategic moves (spanning more than 100 years across 30 industries), the authors argue that lasting success comes not from battling competitors but from creating "blue oceans" - untapped new market spaces ripe for growth.

Blue Ocean Strategy presents a systematic approach to making the competition irrelevant and outlines principles and tools any organization can use to create and capture their own blue oceans. This expanded edition includes: a new preface by the authors: "Help! My Ocean Is Turning Red"; updates on all cases and examples in the book; and two new chapters and an expanded third one - "Alignment, Renewal, and Red Ocean Traps" - that address some of the most pressing questions listeners and readers have asked over the years.

Profoundly Insightful

Identifies and explains in articulated detail, what separates the most successful business innovators, from businesses that also innovated but failed. Brilliant, powerful work. Several years old now, but still relevant. Considered to be required reading for any entrepreneur or business professional. Provides superior analytical framework for marketing. You simply have to read it, because your competition aready has!

Really a good summary of how the big winners win

This book explains how many of the really big winners in the marketplace have accomplished that. And sometimes, how, without continuing to innovate, they have eventually lost that market share again. Even if you have been aware of this type of innovation/reward, it is a good reminder!

I was impressed with the explanation to make the completion irrelevant in a way that everyone can win.

Great concepts. Belabored points. Repetitive Phrases.

This could be a shorter listen. Author uses too many words and sentences to describe concepts.
Buy the book to show support; read a summarised version instead.

Chapter on management

Almost overly intellectual, but very enjoyable. Best chapter for me was the management chapter outlining tipping point management.

A Staple For Every Business Leader

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Its case studies and methodologies should be required in business school. If you are looking to truly make the competition in your industry irrelevant, you must read Blue Ocean Strategy. The physical book is now a staple on my bookcase and I plan to revisit it as my business grows.

Great strategy book, but wooden performance and outdated examples

Blue Ocean Strategy is a brilliant idea that urges companies to do better. Provide a high value, low cost offering that’s hard to imitate.
The author walks through interesting case studies and frameworks to put it into practice.

It feels wrong to hard to knock the author for dated examples (up until around 2005) for a more timeless strategy book, but I would love to see more consideration of contemporary problems and confirmation that things haven’t changed in the last generation.

Its also performed by what sounds like the most boring B -school professor the author could find.
Lots of strange pauses and semi-monotone delivery.

Timeless Information

Many books are written to help business owners and managers stay on the cutting edge of relevancy. Few are timeless. In the future I'm sure some author will rehash and change up this information to create what they feel will be a updated version. We'll see. In the meantime even if such an attempt is made this book will be worth going through because these principles are timeless. They will hold true as long as we have a free-market society.
